Hey all, I recently purchased an L6 out of a tow yard and am restoring it. I already replaced the crank shaft positioning sensor to get it to run. Now I would like to learn more about how to continue to repair the vehicle and have been unable to find a good repair manual as I have for my e30. Is there one that anyone recommends or do I have to learn through guessing, forums, and google? Just curious.

Also Does anyone suggest changing the stock ECU out for a non stock ECU to gain more power that would have been available in European 635CSIs or should I stick to where I am?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have been restoring my 88 325i convertible and am replacing the head now so I know that car decently well but this is a new beast!

For drive train, suspension, HVAC and instruments the e28 Bentley manual covers the bases. The BMW ETM electrical trouble manual is available for down loading in the diy/hints section of this forum, check manufacture date to get the right one. Remember that the L6 is leather wrapped 635csi built only for the 87 model year

Aweomse thank you! yea I know it's just a leather wrapped 635CSI, I just couldn't find a manual for any 6 series! If the e-28 works then I will jump on that!

Be aware that the '88/'89 has a some differences with the engine and exhaust, to name a few, from the earlier cars.

No need to change the ECU, just the chip. Not sure how much it helps on the '88/'89. they already have more HP then the earlier cars.

Awesome thank you guys! and which chip? Sorry I read up on it a while back but lost the information on the chip that I could use and should replace!

Your car should use the 059 ECU. I wouldn't bother chipping. If you want more power, do an upgrade that will get you something. BMW did a great job on engineering these cars which means only expensive items will get you more power. Headers, new intake, standalone EFI, turbo will get you more power. But you have to do some serious work like an engine swap or compression change to get much power.

An alternative would be a differential swap to get you more acceleration.
