Hi guys,

This is my first post here even though I have been a member here for a while. I have been a BMW owner for almost 20 years. I bought a '86 635 back in the 1997 or so when I was in college and drove it for a few years. Once I got a real job I bought a 95' M3 in 2000 and then basically pushed the 635 to the side in the garage in storage. I started it every so often for several years but probably haven't in the last 5 or 6 years until last fall. It ran rough but started surprisingly easy. I have now pulled the 6 back out and cleaned it up and, changed the fluids, plugs, and filters. Started it the other night and let it get to normal operating temp. Runs as good as it did the day I put it in storage. The next time I went to start it is sounded as if a valve was stuck. 2 or 3 loud clanks from up in the front of the engine, it started and the sound went away. Once it is running it sounds fine. Now every time I let it sit and get cold, i get the loud clank a few times, engine starts and it goes away. Engine sounds fine once it is running. I haven't done a compression test yet. I did remove the valve cover but saw nothing that was obvious. Can anyone think of anything else it might be other than a stuck valve? Thanks!

oil check valve might be stuck. Does the oil light go out quick or does it take a few moments

Is this the sound you're talking about? If so then it's your starter Solenoid and I recommend upgrading to a Bosch SR441X Starter instead of keeping the original. It's a real PITA job from personal experience, upgrading the starter makes it much easier to install. Here is a page that helped walk me through it.

Well, it was a stuck valve...ended up breaking a rocker arm...at least I know now....lol...#1 intake valve. Time to go pull the head an investigate further!!

Thanks for the suggestions!
