That's amazing. Dyno runs have been reporting that BMW is being conservative with the rating of their new M3/M4s.
Reports have shown that they are making about 460HP at the engine. But 415HP at the wheels.
While BMW is reporting 425 at the engine.

That news is old news and BMW has always been like that for a long time. Currently, there are mods done to extract 500+ whp already. It won't be long till we start seeing well over 600+ whp as N54 have been proving for quite some time to around 700+ whp on stock internals with turbo and tune mods only. The most recent record is 8xx whp a couple of days ago.

Yeah. Did they under rate the E39 specifically the 540i? Tried looking for info but nothing to be found.
Still really cool.
Probably not. I believe a few of ///M motors were underrated, the successors to the M6x and M5x engines have been, and now the different turbo engines have definitely been underrated by BMW. A lot of dyno results proved it. From the little N20 turbo to the big and mighty S63tu.

So its been mostly just turbo engines that's been under rated?

They likely underrate the engines to compensate for heat soak ... cause you know the minute somebody does a redline blast through the desert and then straps it to the dyno and find 1 less HP than advertised they are going to raise holy hell and how BMW promised and didn't deliver.
Yes, mostly turbo engines.
