Is the BMW VIN decoder ever wrong?

Saw this monstrosity on eBay and ran the VIN just to see if it really was an '89 5-speed car.

The VIN '3268519' comes up as an '89, but also Alpinweiss 2 and automatisch. ???

I remember seeing this car for sale last year for a higher price. Porsche wheels and spoiler tripped my memory.

I recall it not being an original 5spd, among other things.

It's definitely not an '89 L6 since I don't think there were any made.

I would guess the vin listed is either wrong, or this car is even less original than I thought.

It's a shame ot hasn't lost its porsche wheels (contrary, it has new center caps) and ridiculous spoiler.

Ha, this car is really making the rounds. It came out of Spokane WA, member of the local BMW club, The car was a sister to my 89, Alpinweiss, Automatic, he painted it and converted it to 5 speed, he claims the milege is actual. He sold it to someone in Flordia I believe, it went through an auction down there for some really good money "gave me hope :D :D" its been bouncing around auctions since and dropping all the time...:help :help :help

VIN decoder is generally pretty accurate, except that there are some things that it doesn't differentiate, like the M90 engines. I can't remember if it actually displays "L6" or not, but that car is no L6. Not enough leather.
