View Full Version : Driver's door won't close...

I washed the car today, and when I was wrapping up, I opened the drivers door and heard something fall. I initially wrote it off to something in the door pocket, but when I closed the door the thing won't fully close or latch.
It is dark in the driveway, so I'll have to give it a better look tomorrow (was planning on driving the thing :().
Other than the little plastic bumpers (which I suspect might be what I heard fall) can anyone give me any ideas/guidance? Thanks!

Got some from the dealership and Presto! Replaced the one on the other side - it was cracking.
Bringing some to SharkFest to donate to the raffle. :)

There was a thread on the 2002faq (2002s use the same kernel) stating that the pieces have a thick side and a thin side, and the thick side faces the car, allegedly.

It is mind boggling the difference the plastic door latch buffers make in closing the door. I thought my door latch must be out of alignment; I read an earlier thread referencing the buffers, ordered a pair and problem solved. Most inexpensive fix on a German car to date.

Where would I get these plastic bumpers. Also where can I get hub centric rings? Thanks

For anyone wanting to prove these things are completely necessary, if yours are gone and you don't want to wait, cut a 1/2" piece of fuel hose and slide it over the latch. Easy temp fix......

www.bavauto.com $1.95 each for the buffers. hubcentric rings are on ebay motors.

Love this F%$&*ng Forum. Working on my car yesterday suddenly drivers door wont shut without slamming . Check all the latches everything seems tight doesnt appear to be anything wrong. Read this thread today. Boom! Answered. Stuck a piece of fuel line on and... door closes perfectly! OK now who has a part name or part number so I can perma-fix this?!?

Pretty sure it is #3 here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=5531&mospid=47202&btnr=41_0521&hg=41&fg=40

But I'd check. Or just call your local dealer - they'll know how to look 'em up.

@Lee, yeah I couldn't discern a difference either.
My LS door takes a tad more force to close than I'd like. I need to look closer at it; kernels are new...

It is actually #17 on this diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=5531&mospid=47202&btnr=41_0552&hg=41&fg=40
It is referred to as a bump stop on this diagram, but most refer to it as a door latch buffer.

Thanks (so Part Number 51211809735)
I did grab some extras (for the SESF raffle), but they had 24. I ordered some of the little screw covers for the base of the A-pillar, too. They just came in - think I'll buy some more of the bump stops. ;)
