E24 SLS problem

Hi i have an 89 e24 (RHD) in melbourne australia. the SLS system is not working. my local BMW mechanic has tried to disgnose the problem. His view is that the SLS pump is siezed and that asociated elctroics are OK. A new pump is over 4k AUD or the other option is to remove the unit completely and replace with standard springs and strust. I am not convinced about the problem and want to try to diagnose the problem myself. currently the rear of the car is about 10mm lower than it should be which is causing tyre wear problem as the camber is out. no matter how much weight is put in the boot there is no sign of any activity from the pump. does anyone have any experience or documentation for troubleshooting the SLS system? alternatively does anyone have step by step instructions of how to remove the unit? what happens to the struts when the SLS is removed for maintenance? do they collapse?

i want to keep my dear old shark original, so fixing the problem is my preferred solution.

Try adjusting the actuator attached to the sway bar.

One on Ebay in the US for 150.00 if it comes to it. I would think a pump is a pump and if really shot, could be rebuilt.
