View Full Version : Ses light & extended warranty issues
I just purchased a used 2008 BMW 328i with 83,500 miles two weeks ago.
And I have a few questions about the vehicle:
"Service Engine Soon" light goes on but turns off while driving. Do I need to take it to a repair shop to see what the problem is?
This is my first car so I don't have ANY insurance or warranty on it. Is extended warranty necessary? (My dealer offers $3475 from a small warranty company)
I don't really know the DIFFERENCE btw extended warranty & insurance. Do I still need a warranty if I get full coverage insurance?
Please help me out! I appreciate your help!

if the Check Engine light isn't on while the engine is running, then it's not "on".
That light comes on for a self-check when the vehicle is in 'accessory' mode prior to starting the engine.

P.S. I think all states require you to have insurance on the vehicle before it can be registered.

I suspect the OP is confusing his terminology. Like you, AFAIK , no states allow a vehicle to be registered without either 1-liability insurance at a minimum, or 2-meeting certain state-mandated bonding requirements.
It's possible the OP is confusing an extended warranty, which is really no more than an insurance policy against mechanical parts failure on a vehicle with vehicle liability (possibly along with collision and comprehensive) insurance.
If that isn't the issue, then my suggestion is for the OP to immediately see a vehicle insurance agent ASAP and have these terms explained in detail to him.
Thank you for your reply. Yes the light goes off after I started my car. It should be fine then! :)

The original owner hasn't transferred his registration to me yet. The dealer said it would take 2-3 weeks to get the letter from DMV. I'll buy the insurance before that and go register the car here and change my title.

Right.
"insurance" covers damages to the vehicle, other vehicles and/or property damage in an accident.
"warranty" covers mechanical failures of the vehicle itself.
Some people call an aftermarket warranty "insurance", because it's not offered by the manufacturer. However, it performs the same function as a warranty, as it covers mechanical failures of the vehicle itself.

I am coming up on the end of my maintenance warranty . Is it generally a good idea 2 purchase the 1yrar warranty for $1,075. I'm a single mother & really trying 2 educate myself before I deal w/my bmw dealership . Which btw - have been great so far! Thanks in advance for any information you can provide me with👍
