View Full Version : Turbo on N54
I'm looking for info on the N54 turbos. I have an '07 335i with 98k miles on it. I have been told that I run the risk of having to replace the turbos soon. I already had the HPFP issue and waste gates were replaced I think. I am no DIY expert so have no clue what else could go wrong. Any experience with high mileage N54 engines? Is it time to get a new car?

Why worry if you have been exhibiting no problems?

If the warranty was done before 82k miles on the turbos, then you shouldn't worry. You really shouldn't worry anyway unless it's going into limp home mode. The warranty replaced the turbos with the wastegate rattle issue, and yet some of them still rattle. I don't know if mine was ever replaced, but I do have the wastegate rattle. While it's annoying to hear (something you get used to), I'm still at full boost.
Now, granted, I've done some research but have not had any of these issues so far, my car is an 08 with 107k mi on it.

They didn't replace the turbos afaik. Just fixed the waste gates. My car went into limp mode a long time ago due to HPFP. But that is fixed. I have a little siren sound in my turbos now but no big deal. I also feel a little skip in the acceleration. It's very brief so maybe normal turbo lag. I also seem to have problems whenever I push the car. I tracked it once and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree with engine failure warnings. Last week I pushed the car for about 5 minutes and one of the hoses gave out. I know the hose is unrelated to the turbos but it's not exactly confidence inspiring to see the car smoking and spitting out antifreeze after the smallest amount of effort.

Don't pound on the car until you have oil temps off the mark then you are good to go. If you do pound on them when cold you can blow the seals which are really more like snap rings but nonetheless best advice just let the oil warm up...
