I want to buy some style 5s off my friend and I was wondering if they would fit on my 1998 328i. He is selling me just the rims. I think the are 18 inches.

Which style 5s? There are several different sets of "style 5s" in various diameters/widths/offsets.
The most popular seem to be e39 OEM wheels that are BBS RC090s and are 17x8 et20. On an e36 they require hubcentric rings since e39s have a center bore of 74.1 and all other BMWs have a center bore of 72.56.
Since they are a lower offset (stick out further towards fender) than e36s normally run there is a little work required to fit them. Most run a narrower tire (215/40r17) and roll the fenders. It depends on how low you are and what your camber specs are as well.
Post up with the specs of the exact wheels you are thinking of getting and we can help you more.

If they are 18s than they came off of the e38s and are 18x8 et20 front and 18x9 et22 rear.
These will not require hubcentric rings because they already have a center bore of 72.56. However these are going to be even more tough to make fit. 18s with low offsets sometimes take some bumper trimming to fit and the 18x9 et22 rear will stock out 13mm further than the normal 17x8 et20 style 5s people run.

So i just found out that he drive a 1992 525i and that they're NOT style 5s but basket weaves. But to me they look the same but im new to this so I wouldn't know. I think they're the 7.5x16 et20. My e36 is completely stock and they currently have 16in rims.

Normal offset for an E36 is ET41-47. Those ET20 wheels will put the outside 3/4 inch closer to the fender lip. You won't be able to run wide tires. Probably 215-225 max width.

they are actually 15x7 with 5x120 lug spacing. I think the offset is 20mm

If you already have 16s on the car I would not run 15s. I'm not positive but I don't even think 15s will fit over the brakes on your car. I'd pass and wait for another opportunity.
Your original post said they were 18s. Now they're 15s. I think you should just hold off a bit and not rush this.
