View Full Version : E34 Repaint Color Poll

The Night Rider

Okay so at the moment my car is a mix of three colors and is looking pretty ugly (especially after the recent front end conversion). I'm going to be repainting my car probably sometime next year and wanted some opinions since it is a one off decision.

The following colors are what I have narrowed it down to according to my own preferences, not all the pics are of E34's since some of the colors don't exist on E34's (as far as I know).
Also regarding the pics I just got whatever I could find on Google so if it is your image and want it taken down just let me know, no problems.

Calypso Red Metallic:

Avus Blue Metallic:

Techno Violet Metallic:

Amazonite Silver Metallic:

Sepang Bronze Metallic:

If you have a suggestion for some other colour which you think would look good or unique I'd like to hear. Thanks.

Amazonite Silver Metallic looks killer, maybe laguna green?

Yeah Amazonite Silver is pretty unique looking. There are a few laguna green and orinoco green E34's which I really like, but when I think about it as my own car I just don't feel it as much as the other colors I have listed. Thanks for the suggestion though.

You sure that's techo violet? M5's were daytona violet, techno was an e36 m3 color. That picture you show doesn't represent it very well though, it's much more purple in real life. That car almost looks like my madeira schwarz touring (individual color, but there were a handful of M5 sedans painted that color too)

As for the poll, what color is your interior?

I'm not sure to be honest, the place where I got the picture the image poster/car owner said something like "Techno violet, no better color for the E34 in my opinion". Reason I chose techno violet is because it seemed to be a little deeper and darker than Daytona violet. But your right that pic makes it seem too dark. Do you have any pics of your madeira schwarz?

My interior is pretty boring all light gray but don't worry it will eventually be matched to whatever exterior color.

Sterling Silver Metallic

Silver is a good clean color, it would also make my life a lot easier if I could settle for it. However, I am quite tired of seeing so many silver cars where I live and also it seems most of the cars I have owned were silver. I just want something a little more unique.

Thanks for the suggestion. By the way it is arctic silver metallic as it sits.

Whatever color it was originally.

Do you say this because of the large amount of work required to do the door jams, engine bay, and other covered areas? Or because of some quality/finish issues?
Thanks for the suggestion.

madeira schwarz is hard to get pictured. Varies from dark blue to dark purple depending on the light. Here's a pic of my car before it left germany. 516714

If you google madeira violet, it's the same color, bmw changed name in 95 and was used on e36's

good pic of daytona in page 5 of this thread: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e34-m5-discussion/78222-vin-help-last-e34-5.html#post829262

Nice car, I bet it looks great in the sun. With the violets, if that's what I decide to go with, I'm basically trying to get a BMW color close to this (my dads old XJ Jag):

His signature says Calypso but it looks sharper and brighter than all the Calypso's I've seen. Is it just photography/lighting?

I believe the sun really changes it in photos. Where my car is parked, one side looks a bit duller in pictures while the other side that is exposed to the sun can be bright like above.

And I think the bottom photo is the least touched up.

ive never been a big fan of red cars, but calypso looks great on these cars. How about biarritz blue? it looks great on E38's...

I vote Technoviolet. I'm biased - my car is Techno. This picture is out of focus, but it shows the colour fairly well.

"thatonedood", it does make the most sense, I can imagine the many, many hours of prep work required to do it properly.

However, no practical deadlines or time limits exist for this car. I have an E36 daily driver so the E34 is a project waiting to become a daily, I guess you could say.
I will take your suggestion ("BoldUlysses", "atl530i" suggestion) into consideration though.

Thanks.

Nice car. It seems techno violet is gaining a little lead so far, unique looking color.

I'm a little surprised that the two newer BMW colors are lagging behind. I suppose it would be risky, may turn out sh*t.

Sepang would be so great.

RVAE34

Sepang was always one of my favorite but I would have to see it on an E34 to decide. Since I have had Mojave, I actually now prefer it to Sepang simply because I don't like the color shift quite as much. But it's still an absolutely gorgeous color. It's nutty looking in the sun. Techno violet would be a close second to brown for me.

Well since this poll has gone as far as it will go I'll just say what I've concluded.

At the start of this poll I was thinking either Calypso, Techno or Sepang. I've decided to take the risk with Sepang Bronze Metallic, I have liked the color ever since I first saw it and I don't think its been done on an E34 before which adds to the uniqueness.
Something like Calypso would be a lot safer since there are direct examples, but I think I'm after something a little different for all the hard work that will be involved.

Thanks for the input to everyone, including those who said to stick with the original color, I may regret this decision but whatever, I'll probably regret it if I don't try anyway. Hopefully it doesn't turn out to be sh*t brown metallic.

Like I said the plan is to start this sometime next year. I'll update when the prep work starts. Poll is still open for a week or two I think.

Thanks! Yes I'll be doing this myself just like you did. Your probably an expert by now after all that work, I would say my experience painting with guns is limited but I am on a steep learning curve at the moment.
If only yours didn't turn out so good I would have less pressure on me haha. seriously though I'm still looking forward to some better pictures of your car.

Wishing you luck! There's a lot I could have done better. Mine came out very well for a first time, but like I said the good and trunk are eh.

Make a thread about it. Looking forward to seeing how it goes.. Metallic is tricky.

I am curious to know how much the paint runs you. I imagine Sepang will be quite pricey. I would highly suggest going with premium materials i.e. PPG or Sikkens etc. Can't wait to see an E34 in Sepang!

For sure, no point going for cheep stuff when there is so much work involved.

Are you driving this car regularly or cannot have it down in one spot until you are painting?

I have an E36 which is my daily car so the E34 can sit for as long as it takes. Once paint and engine swap are done it will become my daily car.

I would not want to attempt something as involved as a re-paint under tight time constraints, especially since I'm no pro.

I highly suggest getting some practice in before starting on the car.

Get a junk panel some where and practice. I sprayed a junk plastic side skirt and then just went for it :rolleyes

Definitely use good stuff.. and get more basecoat then you need. I ran out and had to make more and didn't quite match 100%. I'd say get 1.5 gallons of base coat.

I used Dupont/Chroma primer and clear. They cure over night.

The Night Rider

Yes all jambs will be done. Engine bay will be done during the engine swap (probably before I start work on the exterior). I would not be able to live with seeing silver door jambs every time I get into the car or open the bonnet.
Not going to do under the carpets or anything like that.
