While cruising down the freeway at about 65, rpm at about 1700+/-, shift mode set to Auto, I mashed the throttle into a passing gear, rpm jumped to about 5000 and mph went 80-85. When I let off the throttle the rpm stayed at 5000. The only way I could get the rpm to drop was to switch into manual mode.
Bad TPS? Other ideas? I what steps can I take to troubleshoot?

Sounds like a stuck throttle, probably a frayed cable.

Not sure how that could be when if I switch to manual mode the RPM switches back to a normal level, but I will take a look.
For an update, I pulled a stomp test of the CEL at it returned a 1213, so I don't think it's relevant to this issue, just something else to diagnose, I will check for vacuum leaks, take a good look at the EGR and run a smoke/leak test. Possibilities could be a bad injector since I do get a part throttle/off line slight stumble.
Does anyone know what the normal engine RPM is suppose to be at a certain MPH?

sounds like transmission wasnt shifting up to me.

Hmm... possible, but what would cause that? Fluid level is fine, gear shifting is normal in Auto mode.

Update:
I found a disconnected vacuum line hanging off the back side of this thing. Not sure what it is but one end connects to a part of the throttle, and the other end connects to the back of the intake. The attached image circles the part the vacuum line was hanging from.

Also, when checking the vacuum Check Valve, #11611312737 I noticed that it flows air or vacuum in both directions, I assume that it is suppose to flow in only one direction, correct?

Replacing the check valve and repairing the vacuum leak had an obvious difference of the engine performance, but the upshift RPM issue is still there. Cruising at 65, I stomp the gas, trans drops down into a passing gear, rpm comes up to about 4500, mph to 80. When I let off the gas the RPM stays high, though I was not able to tell if the trans dropped down into high gear or not.
The CEL will come on for a minute or so then go out, same code, 1213. I did notice an occasional misfire or sputter at speed, which leads me to believe I have a dirty injector or two, plugs look good.

I wanted to give a status update to this issue, I found a few issues which once rectified has seem to correct the problem.
First, replaced the check valve and the bad vacuum line attached to it.
Second, I found a cracked spark plug insulator which was causing a misfire, probably the cause of the CEL.
Third, trans fluid level was about a half quart low.
Thanks for every ones help.
