This question is posed for Jim@Tire Rack:
I need to purchase a set of tires for my new wheels that were just finished. The rears will need to be a 255/35/18 and I am mounting them on a 9.5" wheel. I am not confident I would be able to run a 265/35/18 due to the inner clearance on my car.
With that said; I am looking at S-04 PP's, Conti DW's or Michelin PSS. I actually own all three on various wheel/tire combos I have now. Frankly speaking, I like the Michelin's the least as they are very stiff riding and feel greasy on blacktop roads. The Conti's ride really quiet and their traction limit seems very good. I feel my S-04's that I have on two sets are really nice tires and compare really closely to the Conti's. In my personal experience, I think the Conti's are just a tad softer and quieter than the S-04's.
One thing I've noticed - the 255/35/18 size on the Conti DW reports to be a 10.0" section width whereas most other 255/35/18 tires report to be 10.2" section width. I am actually leaning towards going for the Conti's this time around, but I am concerned about their section width. I am wondering if you happen to have any input on which of the three would be the widest in the 255/35 size?
The other interesting thing - the Michelin PSS's I have mounted on a 9" wheel look more narrow than a set of Conti DW's on 9" wheels with a 245 sized tire. So - just looking for thoughts from you Jim.
Which of the three would be wider? Again - leaning towards the DW's at this point but concerned they would look stretched on a 9.5" wheel given their 10.0" section width versus the 10.2" of others.
Chris.
