I've got a friend who has quite an inventory of NOS Chevrolet & Chrysler parts. I'm trying to help him determine what's in the boxes so we can sell these as a lot. There are barcodes on the outside. Does anyone know what I need in order to read these codes and where I can get the equipment? The inventory is not classic parts, most are probably 2000-2004. For example there is a big-assed box that looks to have a roof panel to a Suburban...
Any help is appreciated,
Billy

You could download a bar code reader for your phone, but that doesn't mean that the number will be recognized. If the barcode is not a UPC the scan isn't going to help you out. Most likely the barcode in the picture has the part number and other stuff encoded in it. So even if you could read it with a scanner, it will basically give you the human readable number that is already on the label.

You can just Google the number that is on the side of the box to find out what the part is. I tried the part in your picture (GM#88936989) and it shows up as a door shell. Here is one of the sites that carries that part:

The boxes just fell off the back of the truck, right? :shifty ;) :D

To read the bar codes, you download a free App for your smart phone that uses the phone camera to read them. I just got through making a batch of labels for a customer that included bar codes and used a smart phone to check my work.

Well, they didn't quite fall off the back of the truck....
Anyway, I had 2 different bar code scanners on my phone and neither one could/would read the codes. I'm going to try another app in hopes of reading these things. There's probably 5000 boxes of stuff and I'd really hate to hand enter and google search those individually. However, my reward would be a free place to store the cars!
