Alright, so let me be clear that I am not versed on auto mechanics at all, but I am having some problems, and need some opinions diagnosing this. So I have been deployed for many months letting my good friend take care of the car. He just contacted me and said that when you crank it the RPM's drop low and the car shakes a bit then either cuts off completely or fixes itself. He also said that when he gunned it to the floor to see if anything happened that it started to pour white smoke. But when driven regularly it runs perfect, no weird fluttery shakes or anything like that. Upon my research it looks like it could be hundreds of things, from a bad fuel pump, cooling system, CPS sensor, Head gasket, or just bad gas. He took it to get a diagnosis at auto zone, and the only thing that it said was, "fuel system running lean." Any thoughts would be much appreciated, as I am deployed and cannot access my car. Thank you! --Garrett

You already said that you did research and it could literally be hundreds of things. What else do you want us to do? Have your friend take it to a shop.

Given the lack of access to the vehicle by the owner, I agree.

Its difficult enough to diagnose issues one step removed from the problem. Being 2 steps away makes it nothing but a guessing game.

The day I posted this I had him take it to many shops but they were all busy, and could not look at it for another week. I was just looking to see if anybody had any similar problems, and could give some insight, being that im halfway across the world and scratching my eyeballs out wanting to know what is wrong with it. I was not trying to be an ass. Thanks

I dealt with this a couple days ago with my 03... The CCV is failing and probably is causing a vacuum leak... It was a easy DIY And I did the whole thing in less than three hours for less than 65.00 on my 325i

Completely different engine and vehicle. Not his problem at all. Not even the same design.

My guess is you have a SULEV e90 with an N51 engine. Check to see if you have a SULEV sticker in the window. If you do, it's most likely the fuel pressure regulator hose inside the gas tank starting to come off. It will run worse and worse until it no longer runs at all. If that's the case, you will need to replace the complete gas tank.
