Hello everyone,
I know the po505 code has had several threads, which I have read, but I still haven't gotten my problem resolved.
So here goes:
1998 740il 143,000 miles. Car was running fine until radiator overheated and cracked. I replaced the radiator, fill tank, upper hose; also, replaced power steering tank and to and from lines/hoses (leaking). After I put everything back together, the idle would surge every minute or two. hitting the accelerator produced a back fire sound, with delayed acceleration. Then, PO505 code appeared.
I checked all connections, hoses, clamps = ok.
I sprayed the cleaner around the hoses to roughly check for vacuum leaks - no difference in idle.
I removed the ICV and cleaned it with throttle body cleaner and then with alcohol dipped q-tips. NOTE: when I first removed the ICV the internal valve did not move when I shook it; after spraying cleaner, it moved (rattled) when I shook it - I am assuming it is supposed to be free moving).
None of this made any difference
NOTE: When I removed the ICV, the car started and idled much better. Of course, I now had 2 error codes relating to the missing ICVl however, no PO505 code! I replaced the ICV and code comes back (did this 3x).
According to a post, this means that my ICV is bad.
What I don't understand is what is bad on it?
I tested it with a meter - 13ohms from each outside connector to center; 26 ohms from outside to outside connectors.
The internal valve moves freely when I shake it.
12v was confirmed on the power cable (center pin). Computer voltage (approx. 3v was seen on the two outside pins of the connector.
So, whats wrong?
I didn't probe the wires while connected to the ICV, because I don't know what Im supposed to see.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Nick

when this happened to me it was because i mixed up two connectors in that general area after replacing the tb gaskets. take a look at them and be sure the grey one is plugged into grey and the black into the black. that fixed it for me.

Ilovecalicos,
I double checked; connections are correct. Thanks for the suggestion.
