I was driving along today and my abs trac ctl and brake light illuminated. I think I may have found the problem, what is this thin wire? is it a speed sensor?

That wire is actually the brake pad wear sensor I think. The DSC/ABS sensor is on the back of each brake caliper heldin place with a 5mm allan bolt. The problem most likely is there......either frayed/corroded wiring or dirt/crud on the sensor. OR (the one you dont want) is your brake module is defective.....

Thank you! Will it hurt to drive the car with those lights on until I get it fixed?

Shouldnt however your tranny "may" not shift past 3rd and you might need to manually shift.......at least thats what mine is doing......I'd try not to drive it too much until you get it figured out and repaired.

How hard is it to replace the module if that's the problem?

What year is your car? Is the speedometer working? If not try and see if the cruise control works

It's a 2001 740i sport and yes the speedometer is working.

I had the same problem and I had the codes read. It turned out to only be a front wheel speed sensor. I'd get the codes read before throwing money at the car

You can try visually inspecting the wheel speed sensors. There is one on each wheel. When I was new to this car and had those lights, I pulled each sensor and cleaned it. Also fixed some chaffed wires on one of them. Having said this, the little bolt that holds the sensor in can be difficult to get out if they have never been changed.
