As our generation approaches historic status, the mileage of the average E36 has undoubtedly climbed. As my 1998 Estoril Blue M3 has 180,000 miles, I have been fortunate to have prevented most issues by replacing parts earlier on. After looking for posts only regarding replacing new ones and their options, I have not found any substantial posts. Let us make this one a go-to.
Recently, I have had misfiring under high load, rotten egg smells, and small instances of smoke while driving. Overall, just a feeling that my car cannot exhale. I have replaced Pre-cat o2 sensors, spark plugs, and fuel filter (Fuel pump is fine). Only thing I have not replaced are ignition coils. Some say that this may produce similar symptoms of misfiring but I am 99% sure that is the cats. ***it is noted that Post cat o2 sensors should also be replaced then
Solutions:
1) Acquire a used cat (yes, selling them is illegal) from the same year M3 and bolting it on. (however, deal with the miles already on those cats)
2) Purchase +$2,000 OEM parts
3) Purchase Magnaflow's Semi-universal Cats (http://www.jcwhitney.com/magnaflow-49-state-semi-universal-catalytic-converter/p3089529.jcwx?filterid=d182y1998g2j1) and have a shop weld them in.
My questions: I think my best option is to buy new cats and have them welded in. By far the cheapest, and better guarantee over the used ones.
Does anyone have any experience with this? All suggestions are welcome.
