Been quoted on refreshing my new used engine and swapping that one into my car for around 50 hours of labor. The guy is asking $4k. That number sounds ridiculous and over priced. He also recommended me to put performance cams in and replace the torque converter when everything is out. I think he is trying to pull my leg because that sounds like it shouldn't take no where near that long to complete that job.

Time to find a new mechanic. Cams for an m6x engine are like $2600, what the hell is he thinking?
Also, why don't YOU replace all the gaskets before it goes in?

Never done something so extensive before with refreshing my engine. I don't have the parts to do the vanos seals myself, and the guides would be tough. But I think I could maybe do the seals and gaskets by myself.

Never a bad time to learn.

I think someone posted book for the chain guides being around 20 hours from start to finish. His LABOR cost alone may be $4k but I can guarantee you that parts alone for a complete refresh will run you between $3k-4k alone. I did everything short of a head gasket along with replacing brakes, rotors, spark plugs, fuel filter and every other gasket & hose you can think of and it was around $5300 in parts. I did everything myself.

It all depends on what your experience is and how you're doing it. If you have the engine on a stand and a bunch of tools handy, maybe 10-12 hours? It would be a LOT easier doing it on a stand than in the car, I'd so much rather swap the engine in ready to go than change the parts as they lie in the car.
Also, while the engine's out, you can detail the engine bay and make it shine.

Did not think it would take that long for that when it is out of the engine bay.

To do the chain guides and vanos and all the seals on the engine? I'd expect someone with no experience to take longer actually. Hell, I'd take longer just cleaning the hell out of everything.
Jeez it'd take almost a week to get all the oil pan bolts off.

50 hours of labor. Considering most shops are at $90 hour for labor....well....$4k seems low.

Shouldn't take more than 15-20 hours on the swap and 10 at the max on the refreshment.

i bet book time for a long block swap is over 20 hours. And i bet it would take atleast 8 hours for the guides and seals to be done on a stand.

Parts are around 1400 for guides and timming tools .. To pull the engine can take anyone 8 hours plus the guides is like 48 hour job .. Taking your time to do it

The hours seems maybe a bit high but the price seems right, seriously. Like these guys said book on doing the guides is 25+ hours, a lot of that time is spent disassembling the motor to get to them first, with it being on or off the car it's not really that much different. The m62 is easy to work , on it's just a lot of labor period. I did the guides at work a couple months ago on an x5......used every minute of the 25 hours.

4k is about what I spent. With all that needs done it is a good price. These are engines you don't want to shortcut to save cash.
