hi guys, having some problems with the 5hp-18 in my e38, it's intermitantly throwing up a trans failesafe program warning then clearing itself !
when clear she goes like stink then limps round in third when the warning is displayed. am i not far off thinking it's not the trans but it may be a wheel speed sensor? as it seems to follow a sequence of abs then traction control then trans failesafe in that order almost too fast to notice.
so i am contemplating doing all four corners as she is 14 years old.
any help thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as my normal stuff is muscle cars and dragsters etc.so this is a bit newer tec than usual

First check your voltage.

Welcome to the forum. Like Paul said, check the condition of your battery. Low voltage causing TFS is a common issue.

Wheel like speed sensor seems like a solid possibility to me then! Good thinking. Especially if it runs great without limping around.

Only peculiar thing to me is that I used to get the warning all the time and there was no limp mode. .. it drove just the same! I assume it was just triggered by low voltage and simply showed up on the dash.
