The car is not running, setting on concrete. When you wiggle the steering wheel back and forth, there is a clunking from down the steering shaft. Car up on the lift and I checked steering box mounts (good) and the u joint from the end of shaft to steering box (good). Clunk is due north on the shaft under accordion boot. Think maybe rubber coupling???
Don't want to pull the freakin thing out without parts on hand...
Thanks

Depending on the model, you may have a rubber coupling or uni joint at the steering shaft to steering box point, and possibly a rubber coupling or uni joint in shaft within the cabin, visible by removing the bottom shaft cover. All could be contributing to your problem.
Mine has a slight knock in the lower uni joint which I intend to replace. I recently had the box reconditioned and the old joint was partially seized in one plane but also wobbly. Mechanic replaced with a used joint that was still not perfect. I understand this uni joint is a common failure item in highe mileage car.
I also intend to replace my rubber couplong with a solid coupling I have found, which should stiffen up the steering feel somewhat with the risk of letting through a little morecroad noise.

Thanks Tony. I suspect the rubber coupling. Everything else checks out and I can't get a visual so I will remove the column and get a good look.
