My 93 318iS was sputtering and took it in the shop. The shop said (local shop) it coded for a Cam Positioning Sensor. It was replaced. Got the car back and took it back to the shop 10 minutes later because it still sputtered between 3000 and 3500 RPMs. The shop said the car isn't coding and haven't figured it out yet. Any suggestions in what may be going on?

When does it sputter? All the gears? Just the high gears under a high load? Does it do it at idle? When was the last time the car got new spark plugs/etc? Have you checked the fuel pressure?

Sputters between 3000-3500 trying to get up high speeds. Kinda like it is about to shift gears (I should have included it has an automatic transmission). It has a new fuel pump, fuel regulator that was put in this spring. I haven't changed spark plugs. Didn't seem that would be the problem (in my own thinking).

Bump....Did I stump the panel?
Maf? Does it rev freely in neutral?

It revs freely in neutral.

DME water temp sensor at front of head. IIRC, the blue connector body. Same issue on my 1995 TI, though I had violent lurching in that rev range only after getting up to temp. I feared it was a fuel system issue so I replaced pump and filter to no avail, managed to get a crescent wrench to fit on the coolant sensor and replaced it. No issues for 2000 miles.

If its faulty the dme just assumes 80 celsius as the temp .. thats a warm motor. That wont make it hesitate in the summer months.

Car is still sputtering. Now the shop says it is coding for the Cam Positioning Sensor again. It has already been replaced twice. The car runs fine when it is first running, but then starts to sputter when it gets warmer. sonomaGTLN2 suggest it could be the DME?

I changed the spark plugs and water temp sensor and very little change. Now it sputters in neutral up at 3500 rpms as well. Cleaned out the MAF with spray cleaner too.

Cam Shaft sensor was the culprit. Car runs like it should now.
