Hello. I am in need of some direction and help with my bimmer. If I’m in the wrong place, don’t beat me up too bad. Just tell me where to go.

I have a 1995 525i E34 with 234k miles. It cranks but will not start.

A bit of information:
- I only have the grey valet key, but I’m told this should start the car. I will get a master key from BMW when I get the car registered. $$$ is the holdup (taxes, fees, more taxes…)
- I’ve replaced the 413 silver label DME with a used replacement DME and swapped the e-proms.
- I’ve checked the CPS. It’s got around 538 Ohms. From what I’ve read, this is acceptable. I’m going to check the Hz with my DMM while cranking to be sure it is transmitting a pulse.
- It’s got low but consistent compression – about 70 psi on all 6 cylinders. I’ve read about cylinder wash and I’m going to address that in the morning.
- The fuel pump will run if jumped to 12v. Fuel does come out of the front fuel rail hose when disconnected. I’ve tried jumping it out while starting, but no luck.
- The coils have 12v on the green wire when ignition is on.
- All fuses are good.
- TRANS PROGRAM is displayed on the information display. My understanding is this code could be set by something as trivial as farting in the seat too hard. Ok, maybe not that easy, but it seems a lot of things cause this code. I’ll chase that down later after the engine is running, unless it needs to be addressed first.
- My wife suggested singing to it, and that would make it feel better. I’m skeptical, but I’ll try it if it will work.

My understanding is that the EWS II will not allow the starter to activate if an incorrect or faulty key is used. Also, it won’t allow starter engagement when the transmission is not in P or N, and that is what this one is doing, which leads me to believe the EWS II system is happy… (?)

I’d like to check the main system relay but I can’t find any documentation which matches the layout of my e-box. My e-box is laid out like this one: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=283881&d=1309843347
Could someone tell me which relay is which?

There’s a video on YouTube by a user named Froggy. He drones on and on (17+ minutes), and I personally had a difficult time following him, but basically he bypassed his EWS II on his M3 by cutting 2 wires and trying them together on the harness side, then isolating the cut wires going into the EWS II module connector. Could someone verify this, or give me a blessing to say to give it a try? Here’s the link to the video. The relevant information begins around 12 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGhaDwDddf4

My father is a big BMW fan (which is good for me, as I can keep it there until it is running as he doesn’t mind) and he has a program and connector which mates with BMW’s circular diagnostic port under the hood. He uses it to reset the airbag lamp on his Z3. Anyway, he scanned my car and this is the result:

Key recognising procedure during the start process :
- The transponder in the key is supplied true the ring antenna en sends the key data to the EWS control unit.
- The EWS control unit controls the data, and then sends the permission signal to the engine control unit (DME/DDE)en de starter.

- After starting the EWS control unit calculates new data (changing code) and the sends it to the transponder into the key.
