As it turns out, the source of my mysterious idle surge (as diagnosed by Cris at Joyner BMW in Asheville, NC -- thanks, Chris!) is the idle control valve P/N 13 41 1 286 688. For location reference, please see # 10 in the linked and zoomed Penske diagram:

These little jewels cost around $200, and I wondered if perhaps any of my fellow BFers might have a known good used one that I can buy for less. I wouldn't ask . . . except that we have plowed so many $$$ into this car lately. :rolleyes

Since my euro does not have an electric idle control valve, and I am not very knowledgable about them, I am going to take a shot in the dark. I had one go bad on my old taurus causing the car to surge between 1100 and 1500 rpms. Based on something I read on another BMW forum, I sprayed the crap out of it with carb cleaner and then rinsed it well by saturating it with WD 40. It worked as new and maybe worth a $3 can of carb cleaner?? Everyone please comment

Yes. Absolutely. May want to substitute a can of intake cleaner in lieu of carb cleaner though.

4th'ed. What will it hurt? They get dirty and stop moving (you will see once you take it out, which is not difficult).
Maybe throttle body cleaner too, while you are at it. :cool That's what I used on my M5's recently and it did not dissolve. Without actually looking it up (too much work), is there any difference between them, really? Pretend I don't have a degree in chemistry for now... At least it isn't organic chemistry.
Now brake cleaner, don't use that.

Thanks, guys, but I have already tried cleaning it. I'm going to go with replacing at this point.

Is the 85 ICV the same size, spec, and resistances? I have two used ones I think. Ill have to check.

dwal,
I just checked on Penske, and apparently an ICV from a 635 will not work on a 633: different part number, different location.
But thanks for the offer.
