Since I bought my E36, the check coolant light has been coming on randomly from time to time even though coolant is full. Is it just a bad sensor? Should I replace it with this:

Well at that price it's worth a shot, they are a common part to go with some age

Be careful of the eBay sensors. I have one on mine and it trips the check coolant on every startup and shut down even though the coolant level is fine. Would suggest going OEM or OEM-like brand for this.

I have a coolant level sensor from my local BMW dealer, and I still have this message. I thought I had it fixed, but I do not. The coolant is fine, but the message comes up at the end of almost every trip as soon as I switch the key to off. The sensor is nothing more than a switch that changes state when the coolant level drops sufficiently. It is not possible to have the coolant drop so low as to trigger the switch, but be at the correct level when you check it later. Therefore, the switch or the wiring is at fault.
