Hello,

BMW 316i (E46) 1999 - 2000 MOT failed on Exhaust Emissions Test, Here are the Test results:

Fast Idle Test

CO = 0.00 % vol Pass - 0.30
HC = 8 ppm Pass - 200
Lambda = 1.332 Fail 0.970 - 1.030

Second Idle Test

CO = 0.00 % vol Pass - 0.30
HC = 5 ppm Pass - 200
Lambda = 1.146 Fail 0.970 - 1.030

Any suggestion or advice would be helpful.

Thanks in Advance.

Sure looks like the oxygen sensor is suspect. Lambda is another name for the O2 sensors.

Thanks, MarcoZandrini,

Do you know how much does 02 sensor cost and can I replace the 02 sensor myself?

Will INPA software detect this kind of problems if I run diagnostic?

My mate suggesting to use Fuel Injector Cleaners + Shell V power petrol, so wondering will this help to sort out Exhaust emission problem?

Kind regards

can I replace the 02 sensor myself?

If you have to ask, probably not.

O2 sensors cost anywhere from $25 to $200 in the US. You're in England so I haven't any idea how much it'll cost. Replacing an O2 sensor can be a real hassle depending upon the stubbornness of the sensor. Find a garage that worx on bimmers/beemers.

The O2 sensor can be areal pan to get out of the car, but they are typically in a fairly easy location to find and remove. If the part is being stubborn and isn't coming off, I recommend removing that part of the exhaust and removing out from underneath the car, as I knocked my car off the stands one time trying to muscle it off and nearly killed myself literally.

As for price, I believe a Bosch one for BMW is typically $110-150 or so, depending on where you get it from.
