Hi all,

I recently purchased a 2012 F30 with 7k miles on it (CPO), which is an 8-speed automatic. I notice that, when driving the car, it acts strangely at around 10-20mph. I drive a lot in a city, so I spend a lot of time at those speeds. Essentially, if I push down on the gas to get up to 10, 15, or 20 mph and then let off the gas, it seems like the car starts to downshift aggressively or almost starts to lightly break. So, rather than coasting naturally to a stop, it feels like the car is "tugging" and slowing down much more than it should. It jerks any passengers in the car forward, and makes for an uncomfortable ride at times. I'm not sure if it's happening at higher speeds - I have not particularly noticed it, but I haven't been looking as closely.

Any thoughts?

I tried an Adaptive Transmission Reset - I'm not sure if I did it successfully, but either way, nothing seems to have fixed the issue.

Thanks!

Have a 2012 Sportline with the Sport auto. I think it may be the brake regeneration that seems to cause the jerking. My car downshifts pretty hard when rolling slowly. When in traffic; when it's really bad , I just drive in comfort or Prius mode at times which seems to improve if. I drive only in Sport unless in heavy traffic.

I believe that what the OP describes is normal operation.

BMW programs the transmission to downshift to keep the engine speed up to keep the turbo spooled up so that you can have full power available when you go back on the gas. BMWs do not "coast" per se for that reason (newer ones have an option for eco pro configuration that can activate coasting, however.)
