Bumper shock question - re: '79 and '85 e24s

I'm gettin serious about tucking my bumpers, but I'd like to find a way to have a little cushion if I get too close to an immovable object. Does anyone know if the bumper shocks from a '88-'89 e24 will fit on a '79 or an '85 sixer without doin surgery on the cars....are they interchangeable? If not interchangeable, are there any other options?
