EDIT- And of course I look like an idiot with the thread title... changed it a couple of times and didn't change 'advice' ... sorry!

Greetings,

I am a regular on the E31 forum but now find myself working on my gf's 2004 530i. I need a little help diagnosing a no start / no crank condition.

The car was started many times the other day but all of a sudden refused to start at a gas station. The car was jumped from the front and started right up, so I figured it was battery related. The alternator is just over a year old and the battery is about the same age. Even though the battery was holding a solid 12.5V, I installed a new one anyway. As you can imagine, the car still refused to start.

The brake pedal switch is working as is the trans gear selection switch so neither of those are causing the issue. There is no cranking going on at all. If I try starting the car I can hear a faint humming noise. I can stop the noise by shifting the trans into gear (which makes sense). There are no lights on and the scanner came back with no codes.

I'm trying to decide if the car needs a new starter or if its something like an ignition switch, starter relay or solenoid.

Any ideas or things to try would be greatly appreciated. I have a full array of tools and a lift so I would like to do this myself, but I don't have a ton of free to time work on this car right now.

Thanks for your help.

Sure sounds like a possible failed starter to me.
