hello bf.c this is my first build thread and im hoping its going to be a good one. i've learned a lot from this forum and i think its the proper thing to do and try and give back what i can. i will to try to dump as many photos and videos as possible and share all of my experiences and what ive learned. all work has been done by myself and my brother, even the welding!
a little background on the car; 97 328is that my little brother picked up from another forum member. the car was exactly what we wanted. really ugly, stock and cheap, but low miles m52 with 5 speed zf trans. the car needed lots of attention, and it still does. so far, we have replaced just about every piece of rubber with either solid or poly bushings and mounts. its a long list, so i will try to make it as short as possible:
solid motor/trans mounts with reinforced front subframe
poly diff bushings and upgraded bolt
solid rear subframe bushings with m3 subframe reinforcements welded in
poly offset front control arm bushings
poly rear trailing arms bushings with RTAB pocket reinforcements
AKG rear camber arms
lemforder tie rods with 5mm spacers and meyle HD control arms in the front
x brace
all new cooling system(all oem parts)
new spark plugs, rebuilt fuel injectors, new fuel filter
shell rotella t6 5-40 in the m52, royal purple synchromax in the trans and redline for the diff
stage 4 f1 clutch and flywheel
new flex disk, center support bearing, driveshaft was balanced
3.38 LSD from an auto e36 m3
momo steering wheel, crappy z3 short shifter with trm tall shift knob
carbon fiber hood, custom hood pins
BC racing coil overs with swift springs(8k front 12k rear) and camber/caster plates
stock front sway bar with non-m endlinks and no rear bar
gutted interior with full fiberglass seats and custom seat brackets
17x8 bbs style 19 with federal 595s 245-40 squared
25mm wheels spacers in front and fender flares from poland
m50 manifold with custom cold air intake and asc delete
stock headers, stock mid pipe(same as m3) just gutted the cats and dinan muffler
reflashed dme by desertBMW
there's more, but this about sums it up. we really enjoy the car and it absolutely rips through canyons and slides really nicely. as soon as we finish the car(needs brakes) we will be hitting the track for our first time. now time for some photos and video.

this is how we started our last job. dropped the rear subframe as a whole. dis-connected driveshaft, trailing arms, brake calipers, e brake cables, 4 sensors and boom(my m3 in the background)
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r107/curttruc4242/trevs%20328is/20140104_134005-1_zps234c930d.jpg (http://s142.photobucket.com/user/curttruc4242/media/trevs%20328is/20140104_134005-1_zps234c930d.jpg.html)
popped out the diff, then pressure washed rear subframe

then unbolted everything from the subframe
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r107/curttruc4242/trevs%20328is/20140112_150002_zps404291c5.jpg (http://s142.photobucket.com/user/curttruc4242/media/trevs%20328is/20140112_150002_zps404291c5.jpg.html)
this is how we had to press two of the 4 subframe bushings out. the subframe is spot welded to the press and tied down by two tie-downs. yes, we bought our own 2 ton press for all of our future projects
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r107/curttruc4242/trevs%20328is/20140112_171507_zpsefdeb532.jpg (http://s142.photobucket.com/user/curttruc4242/media/trevs%20328is/20140112_171507_zpsefdeb532.jpg.html)
new solid AKG bushings installed. we had to very very lightly grind down the outer circumference of the bushing and then we were able press them in.

boring video, but this is how we cut out the fenders for the new ebay flares
- - - Updated - - -
after cutting out the rear fender, it had split into two so we had to weld it back together to retain its original strength. basically, the outer fender splits apart from the wheel well and the two need to be tacked back together.

the front is much easier. the metal is even more thin than the rear and there's no welding the two seems back together. just cut and rivet

before we could even get to that point, the car needed a new engine wiring harness and dme. when we bought the car, it was running on a megasquirt standalone ecu and had a hack-job for a wiring harness. after 6 months of driving the car around, it finally stopped starting out of nowhere. after trying for a few months to figure out the problem, we decided it was best to ditch the megasquirt and hack job wiring for the original BMW equipment.

i dont have too many pictures of the wheels. we broke them down the same day we bought them and left the centers OEM silver but had the lips polished and all the bolts were powder coated. we used a nail set to get all of the bolts out and a 10mm 12 point socket to remove the nuts from the back of the bolts. then a big 4x4 piece of wood and a towel was used to pop the centers out of the barrels. it was actually pretty fun and easy, you just need to take your time when putting everthing back together. i used a small piece of wood to tap all of the bolts back into their splines in the barrels, then set the center in and then loc tite and tighten all of the nuts on the back. oh and new stainless steel valve stems to finish it off

we are having some problems with the car right now and its only got a couple thousand miles on a brand new clutch. it feels like its slipping, the shifting feels even more notchy than before and the gear rattle sounds different. so i had to drop the trans again and we didnt find much wrong except for a groove in the pressure plate from the clutch not engaging perfectly flat. its our own fault for buying a used, but low mile clutch kit from a friend. we replaced the clutch and had the flywheel resurfaced, but i only resurfaced the pressure plate by hand with sand paper and it just wasnt enough.
so while we're there we are upgrading to the akg shifter and selector rod, getting shift detents replaced for 1, 2 and 3 gears(already had 5th and reverse done), replacing slave cylinder and also having the selector rod seal replaced. we didnt do the seal last time and trans fluid leaked into the selector rod joint foam. here's some photos from our first clutch job:
old pressure plate, clutch and flywheel was slipping pretty bad after a few minutes of hard driving. lasted 122k miles

this is what i want my 328is build to be like.thanks for the compliment!
so this week we picked up clutch and pressure plate number two and had the flywheel resurfaced again. my brother got the same set up as last time, the stage 4 6 puck un-sprung. it looks like an updated design though, now with 8 pucks instead of 6. i will get pics for you guys later. today, we are dropping the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate off at a balancing shop to have it all balanced together. the trans seal and shift detents were replaced and the shop only charged us $140. also, super duper over-priced akg shifter and selector rod have been delivered. as soon as everything is balanced, we will throw it all together, drive the quickest but most boring 500 miles for break-in and report back with results.
this weekend we are going to try to replace the plastic pieces and the rubber trim that goes under and around the 3 rear windows. not excited about it but it should be somewhat relaxing compared to a clutch job lol

don't worry, the AKG shifter is not comparable to the z3 stuff... I also went trough several BMW shift linkages and cheap short shifters over the years, finally bought the AKG shifter and never looked back.

Just like everyone else has said you made a great choice on that AKG shifter/DSSR combo. You can't beat the simplicity of the shifters design and just how solid it shifts with poly/solid bushings. Btw I got one a few months back when I swapped in a zf into my 325i and its just awesome.

yesterday my brother and i got the new clutch and trans back in. car is ready to drive, just need to bleed brakes and slave cylinder. also my dad is super awesome and attacked the nasty clear coat on the hood with some 80 grit and electric sander. its as smooth as a babys ass except for one small section left in the center. once the sanding is done, then we will be wrapping it in 3m gloss black vinyl. we have no experience with vinyl wrapping, but we'll see how it goes.

back with another update. car is running good and looking better and better. been driving her hard and everything seems to be holding together. vinyl wrapping is definitely challenging, but not too bad. the hood came out pretty good, but if you get up close you can see some wrinkles and some bubbles here and there. installed the new headlights which are total pieces of crap. the fitment is weird and we need to mess with them but they look okay.
here's a pic of the interior. we're gonna mess with the diamond plate center piece and make it smaller and not so flashy. and full wiring reduction one day

Hey guys, I need some help with the bimmer. im trying to avoid making another thread just for this, so maybe I can get some help in here.
car was idling weird, no cel, took off intake manifold to fix pinched hoses from m50 manifold conversion, car idled fine for a couple of weeks. remove oil pan for baffle, safety wire, etc and car idled weird after. threw cel for o2 sensors control limit and adaptation limit. double checked all vacuum connections, dip stick was not in all of the way(replaced o-ring during oil pan work), popped it back in, replaced MAF with a known working one, cleared cel, ran fine for a track day and a couple weeks of driving. went out for some sliding one night and cel popped up again, exhaust pulse was not smooth out of the tail pipe, we could smell a tiny bit of gas(mis-firing?) and idle was being weird again.
Checked dip stick and everything else, couldn’t find anything wrong except for maybe the dip stick again. Made a bracket for the dip stick, and its still idling weird, and the exhaust is definitely not like it should be.(sound and feel)
dont really notice any loss of power, just keep getting a cel for o2 sensor control/adaptation limit, once for air mass sensor and im pretty sure its mis-firing, but im not too sure, im new to all of this. if my icv or other sensors like cam or crank position were going out, wouldn't i be getting codes for that?
the o2 sensors have less than 3k miles on them and are the oe ntk that everyone gets on amazon. Fuel injectors have all been refurbished and tested, fuel filter replaced, new spark plugs, no vacuum leaks. All other sensors are stock. Sorry for the essay, please help.

Its been a while since this has been updated. Castro motorsport was able to fix the car for us. First, we took it to a local mechanic and he told us there are no vacuum leaks which really confused us. Got the car towed to north Hollywood and Chris castro determined that there was indeed a vacuum leak and the CCV was the culprit. So he just deleted CCV and re routed the hose for crankcase pressure to the intake elbow. Car has been running great since. Thank you Chris!
My bro and I got to do another track day before the end of the year. We went to willow springs again for some streets of willow counter-clockwise. We definitely learned a lot. Everything went great for both cars(surprisingly) except we had to find out the hard way that jacked scrub radius chews threw tires. We are both running near 0 offset and our tires ended up looking like this after less than 1k miles and 2 track days;

i need lots of seat time and then im going to turbo this thing. gonna stick with the stock m52 since they are a dime a dozen for me and they are easily capable of 500whp with stock internals. also, i have e85 everywhere around me so i will be able to crank up the boost without having to build my motor or use some silly headgasket. i love the forced induction section of this forum, sooo much good info.

That's pretty sweet dude, you definitely just gave me the incentive to browse that part of the forum a lot. Do you think the m50 is just about the same? Or is it a whole different ball game when it comes to the forced induction and reliability with the m50 and m52. Also that will be really sweet dude, I am really happy for you.

the seats are from jegs and are made by procar. the seats i have are the "drifter series" they're inexpensive and will do for now but i'll probably be getting a momo or sparco seat for the driver at least. heres a link for the seats

I've been checking those out, not too bad? I know they are dirt cheap, but these look like they have more padding than the Sparco Sprint I planned to use. Any more pics of them in the car? It looks like you're just using stock seat belts as well. I'm trying to figure out a harness bar for mine. Thanks for the reply. I'm building mine to learn drifting, so you're thread is a big help.

I'm building mine to learn drifting, so you're thread is a big help.the seats are super comfortable and hold you in pretty well. fyi, if you run a harness without a rollbar and roll the car over onto its roof, you will be stuck in an upright position and the roof will cave. bad news bears. i highly recommend sticking with stock seat belts until a proper roll bar is installed. harness bars should only be built into a roll bar, not just by itself.
one problem i had with these seats is that the bolsters at the bottom were so wide that it was a challenge to get the seat centered with the steering wheel. i have stripped interior and still had to smash the trans tunnel a bit to get clearance.

That never happens loli believe i have the vinyl version. the material is pretty damn good quality for the price, but it is starting to dry out after almost a year. i would give the other materials a try, they were just out of stock when i ordered so i was forced to go with vinyl. they flex a tiny bit way up at the top but nothing to be concerned about. these seats are perfect for big guys though, just a little bit of a challenge to center to the steering wheel being that they are so wide. maybe if the seat is mounted at the right height, you wouldnt have clearance issues. ours is mounted very low for helmet to roof clearance

You are correct about the seat belt receiver, its bolted to your seat so it can be reused. We have ours bolted to the side of the seat where the side mounts bolt up

the vinyl only started cracking on the seat area. as you can see in this pic, there's 3 sections of the seat that are removable and can be re-wrapped in whatever material you want. they use velcro to stay in position

lame picture but we modified the rtab brackets for more adjustability. when running 0 camber and low ride height, its not possible to get enough toe-in. longer bolts are needed to hold the bushing in the bracket and we used washers for shims on the outside of the bushing.

luckily the coppers were nice about it and didnt take our cars, but they did write us up as gross polluters. this requires us to have the cars inspected by a CA referee. unfortunately we are a little too modified to be able to pass so we are going to non-op the cars and find ourselves a pair of trailers.
the 328is is at castro motorsports as we speak, getting the wire harness thinned down. we also asked him to do a couple other things while he was there; remove fuel evap thing in the trunk, remove abs, install proportioning valve(if he thinks we actually need it) and relocate the fuse box to the interior. ill update with pictures as soon as we get the car back. we have quite a few wheels and spare tires now, so should be able to burn them up soon at WSIR balcony.

it is straight piped header back. i used the first half of an obd1 midsection, just cut right after the two down pipes merge and welded on 3 inch tubing the rest of the way. its so light that i only need to use the hanger in the back. It is way too loud for the street though. my brothers m3 has supersprint reps with 3 inch tubing all the way back to a borla xr-1. it is still really loud at wide open throttle but its almost quiet enough at low rpm for the street.

got pretty lucky and was able to fix the car for 75 bucks total. just needed to replace the center tube of one of the akg rear camber arms which was only a $30 replacement and the front control arm became a taco so we replaced some ball joints in one of our spare arms and was good to go! i will be getting it re-aligned after our next drift day which is gonna be at the balcony again, next saturday december 26th.

Are you still rocking the Procar seats? Do you think they would fit a car with a full interior? I'm 5' 7" with a 32" waist and need something to hold me in better than stock seats for autocross. They're on sale on Jegs for $148 shipped and was thinking about getting them.

I have the procar seats. I like them in relation to the price. Im 6'1" with a 33" waist and I like the way they fit. However, these are not great for daily use. you can feel the springs, and supports in the seat. They are a bit "squeaky" as well. For the price they are a GREAT upgrade though.
