Wait do you want stretch or do you want meaty fitment? Is this for your e36? What's the offset on the wheels? I ran a 255/35r18 on my WRX with 18x9 wheels. I also have seen people run 205/40r18 on an 18x9 wheel. We need more info here.

205s are a good place to start on a 9. Did that with some vette wheels long ago and was happy with them.

Meh 205s on a 9" wheel don't look good to me. Too much stretch. Unless you actually need to run that much stretch to fit the wheels I wouldn't do it otherwise. The width and offset specs should be stamped somewhere on the wheel.
Something like this.

This is a 215/40 on an 18x9.5. 205/40 would be similar to this on an 18x9. I personally think 225/40 on an 18x9 is the best looking.

I agree with the 225/40R18
