Hey everyone. I need to install an auxiliary input in my 530i. I cannot take listening to the radio anymore. I really do not want to purchase an after market radio unit. I am trying to keep the car as oem as possible. I know that if your car has a radio from the production date of 09/2002 you have DSP which allows you to install the aux input kit. I did some reading and a lot of people just purchased the newer radio and installed them. So my question is this. Are the radios, with DSPs, plug and play on cars that do not have those radios? Will i need the amplifier installed or just the radio? If you guys have an easier solution on installing an aux input, please let me know. Thanks in advance. I need my music to be controlled by me. :help

Hi, I'm new here but saw your post and thought I'd recommend that you consider looking at bavsound.com I purchased their soundplicity control 3 (Dice) unit recently and I'm pretty happy with it. It's a great product, I will say their customer service is quite lacking though. I've called then multiple times and have yet to receive a call back, and if they do answer they aren't really that helpful. At least in my case. But it's pretty easy to figure out without their help, just takes a while. Here's a video of how it works, also it shows a setup where video is played through the existing nav. Well I hope this helps. Oh btw, if you have a dsp unit, be sure and order the dsp adapter or you will have to order it for it to work. Complete unit costs about $310, it's sorta pricey, but it sounds pretty good for a factory stereo.

Just install the Aux kit from BMW or make your own.

Replace HU and you'll lose the OBC.

My car is a 99 & came with cassette and DSP, I purchased a business CD player on eBay that was removed from X5 + BMW Aux kit and it works great. I did this 4-5 years ago so I can't say for sure, but isn't there a dual AUX input CD players which lets you retain the CD changer in back + AUX input? Anyhow i still have my cd changer connected as well which really is useless now since i have indash CD + AUX haha.

Did the radio you purchase have DSP? It was just a plug and play and everything worked? That is what I'm hoping on doing.

BMW said they cant help me since my radio does not fit the required specifications for the installation. Do you know if a newer radio with DSP will plug and play in a car with no DSP? if it does ill buy the kit and the radio.

Good for you. I do not. That's why I'm asking if a radio with DSP will plug and play in my car which does not have a dsp radio, with out modification.

No. DSP is an awesome thing. But if your car is older then 2002, there is no possibility to have AUX input. You must then buy the DSP adapter, which costs ~70$, and i will never pay that much for this little shit.. Anyway if your car above 2002 you just buy kit from BMW and do it easy...

DSP is completely independent of the CD/radio. Buy the CD/Radio with Aux input and/or MP3 capability and it will work with or without DSP.

Sorry, this is not true. I'm running X5 CD/Radios with Aux input and MP3 capability in (2) '00 528i's and (1) '01 530i. One of the 528i's has DSP. You need cable adapters to convert the round pin harness to the flat pin CD/Radio along with the Aux input cable kit.

Thanks for your help. So I just need to purchase a radio after September of 2002 ( dealer ship said only those radios can have aux) and convert the pins and I will be good?

I''m not sure of the exact date, but the CD/Radio is all you need. E39's switched from round to flat pins around MY 2001, so you probably don't need the harness adapters, just the aux cable kit. I have a Dec '03 CD/Radio w/Aux I don't need. PM if interested.

OP doesn't have 4:3 nav, and it doesn't seem to be very common in the US.
There's no way for us to know you've got nav. I agree.......w/nav, your options are limited.

AUX is lame
Buy a grom audio kit and be done with it. Not all DSP equipped cars need a DSP adapter. Only if your CD changer has the coax into it. True for older models (1997-2000) if I am not mistaken.
If you do not have satnav but have DSP, no need for a DSP adapter either. Simply connect on the back of the radio and you are done.

I have a grom dsp kit http://www.gromaudio.com/store/accessories/bmw_dsp_conversion_kit.html in my 00' 540it with 4:3 navi with dsp. Its expensive for a little $hit like that but its worth it at the end. I basically used cd changer as a way for me to use aux. Cd changer must be plugged in by 3 wires (?) other wise the computer wont play anything when u switch to cd and couple of seconds it will switch back to fm/am radio.

In order to make it look oem, i found this to alt. to 'mini aux kit' which is what? 40 bux?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ISIMPLE-IS335-AUX-WIRE-DM-UNIVERSAL-3-5MM-DASHMOUNT-AUXILIARY-AUDIO-INPUT-KIT-/131118227411?pt=US_Adapters&hash=item1e87415fd3&vxp=mtr

Just have to drill 3/8 hole, and slide it inside. I'll take a pic tomm if u like.

But the kit only works with cars that have dsp correct? I do not have dsp. And I have never heard of a grom kit before. Is that a type of Aux that connects to the 3.5mm port on your phone and lets you play music?

Thanks for info. I am looking to buy this DSP kit half year, but principles dont let me... Can you tell more about it, how is the quality? What do you mean about couple of seconds? Does the kit is not complete somehow?
About cd changer you're right some of them dont have dsp cable, but mine does :(
Can you tell how it works? You just put in cd mode and it plays on CD1 for expl forever?

You dont need this kit if you dont have DSP. You can buy directly adapter without the dsp like :
link (http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-Adapter-Interface-iPhone-iPod-Droid-Bluetooth-AUX-GROM-Audio-BMWSU2P-/121159629071?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3ABMW&hash=item1c35ad390f&vxp=mtr)
then you can put your phone and everything that plugs in to aux jack. They offer it even with bluetooth, usb...

Thanks guys for helping me out. I think I am going to go with the GROM Audio. I have never heard of it until now. Thanks for your time and posts.

Also does anyone have a link to a clear guide of installing the GROM Audio in the back of a Radio unit of an E39 with no DSP?

It is all on their site. Very good kit and well documented. Very easy to install.
