I know that they changed the exhaust on our cars mid 1987 and i know that mine is that later version. Ive been toying around with the idea of deleting the resonator from my system to get some better sound but i want to keep my original cat back intact. Im in the market for a OE type replacement muffler for my system. I had done this with my 86 6er with an ansa muffler and i loved the sound but that system is for the older type exhuast. but i found a few options for an E34 535i exhaust. now the question is is the e34 535i rear muffler the same at the 88/89 6ers? it looks the same but i want to make sure. the only other thing i can think of is buying the same ansa rear section i did before and just have the exhaust shop bends the pipes in the right direction.

I don't know if the "muffler' is the same, but the E24 exits from the drivers side valance and the E24 from the center (sorta) So, the rear sections are not the same.

The e34 muffler is not the same. Not in shape or size. The difference between the 88 and older is the resonator placement. BMW/Boysen moved it into the passenger side by the wheel well instead of down the trans tunnel. 88 exhaust is heavier than the earlier cars.

You can use the same ansa muffler as before, the tube diameter is the same.

yeah upon further investigation you are very correct! I'm going to purchase the ansa rear section and run pipes straight to the cat and leave the resonator out of the equation. Hoping it produces the sound that i want! if not back on with the stock system
