View Full Version : Causes of high idle

What components would cause high idle? I have no vacuum leaks and I'm trying to chase this down.
You can adjust the idle speed via war chip and I have it set for 600. If I cold start the car the idle will stay at 600 but the second I start moving and come to a halt, the idle will rise to 800-1000 rpm.
While trying to diagnose the problem today, I unplugged the Idle Control Valve and the idle dropped to 600 like it was programmed to do. Plug it back it, and it shoots to 900.
Does this mean the control valve is bad?

I also changed my harmonic balancer recently. I changed it to the updated one found on later M60 engines.
The one on the right.
Weighs less, doesn't extend out as far either. Same circumference.

ICV clogged? try cleaning it out. (not awfully familiar with the m60)

Just cleaned it out and ran the DIS test on it to see if it threw faults, nothing seems to be wrong with it.
Still looking for clues on what's causing it

Hmmm, wasn't aware there were different wheels. Are the m60 wheels interchangeable with the m30s? Sorry to highjack.

No, the M30 engines use vbelts, and the M60 use serpentine.
I also have swapped to the updated M60 Vibe damper after my original was damaged.. I have not noticed a problem with idle.
have you checked the floor mat that its not slid up onto the pedal?

Really? Shit. I checked the mats, even adjusted the throttle via cable and nothing still. I'm going to replace the icv and go from there

Intake leaks can cause wonky idle.

You mentioned you adjusted the throttle cable, I would suggest just replacing it. Its cheap enough.

Do they tend to shrink over time? I'll probably change it if a new ICV doesn't do anything.

Ffs.. New (used) icv. Nothing's changed.
How do you test these things anyway?

Does your car have cruise control?
Mine started acting funny and would keep the throttle open more than it should be.

is the idle only higher when cold?
TPS is a possible issue

I never tested the tps. Going to give that a try.
As for the cruise control, I loosened the tension on the cable but I'll just remove it to see if the idle changes at all. That and the actual throttle cable to see if the idle will finally lower.

I disconnected the ASC throttle cable and unplugged the ASC tps in hope of getting rid of my high idle, yet it stills idles high.
Can anyone lend a hand? I'm going crazy trying to fix this

did you check the TPS on the TB? its not a common fault on m60s, but you never know..

Tiny vacuum leak somewhere? Oil dipstick seal? Oil cap? If it's not any of the things you listed there's little else to go on.
P.S.
Your car is what I want my 540 to look like :D

I'm starting to think I have a vacuum leak, even though the whole top end of the engine is new. Going to do a smoke test if the tps is working properly.
And thank you! These looks do come with a cost I might say. Haha

Update
Changing the TPS is harder than I thought, I really don't want to pull the whole front part of the manifold. Does anyone have any tricks to getting it off? I'm starting to get rustled

Update
I changed the TPS and Idle Control Valve and....
NOTHING
I think my DME is faulty, that or my war chip. Going to try using another DME with a different war chip and see what's up.
