Just bought a 2008 528i a few weeks ago and I'm wondering what the next step to maintain the car would be. It has almost 97,000 miles. Just had brakes, tires, battery and tpms replaced.

Thanks in advance

I'd recommend you to change the trans fluid, coolant, brake fluid, rear diff fluid, etc.
If you are not sure when the oil was changed last, go ahead and change the engine oil as well.

Could one of those items in specific be hurting my MPG?

Thank you

The fluids...no. But at your mileage its time for new plugs and that will make a difference.

If you have Service requirements function in car you can easily check all services needed (to be honest not all what supposed to be done). You can check your brake fluid boiling temperature(recommend replace every 2 years), coolant, plugs (-> leave coils alone if engine running fine) are changed every 100 000km in Europe (about 60 000mls), oil depends how many mls per year you make but I would recommned every 10-12 500 mls, air (may hurt MPG if dirrty), cabin filters, transmission fluid is lifetime but many users and workshops recommend to change it every 60 000mls. Not sure if it has servo oil but if so check if it looks like dirrty black engine oil->if so replace. After service maintenance carried out you probably feel some difference in engine running and MPG.
