Hey everyone,

I've done quite a bit of research on this noise but I would like to see if I could get some confirmation from the forum. All signs currently are pointing to a bad CCV. I went out this morning and pulled the hose that connects to the vanos off and I had some yellow sludge inside that hose. Then today I started to get a howling noise, which I've read could easily be a CCV. I know that it has never been done on this car by the PO and it's probably well over due.

1999 528i

Car was bought at 115k miles, currently sits just under 125k.

I took a video and uploaded the audio here to hopefully allow you guys to hear what I am hearing. Any tips/help/advice are appreciated, Thank you.

You should start to hear the sound at 40 seconds on.

No hose that connects to the vanos that I know of, you must mean the valve cover or the CCV.
If its not the CCV check all of the idlers and pulleys, sort of sounded like it could be one of them if it's not the CCV.

Whoops jimlev you're totally right. I was thinking vanos but I meant just the upper hose connecting to the valve cover. I'll start checking pulley's today as well.
