I am replacing my clutch and flywheel here in the next few weeks and was wandering what all fluids I'll need to have and what all I should replace while I am doing this. It'll be on a 2001 540i6 sport. Any ideas tips and tricks would be very helpful. Thanks all!

Are you doing it on your back under the car?
Got the special T60 to remove the flywheel?
Might as well replace the rear main seal, the pilot shaft bearing, maybe the pilot shaft seal on the tranny too.
Redline MTL in the tranny and your favorite brake fluid is all you need for fluids.

I'm currently researching doing this project as well. Here's what I've found so far.

If you haven't bought the clutch and flywheel yet, you simply can't beat these prices. The member bought these recently and they are direct fit. The clutch is for M5 which is cheaper, direct fit for 540 and nice upgrade over the 540 clutch. The flywheel is for the 540.

If there is good price on something I'll share it with fellow member and I'm hoping others will do the same. I wish I was making so much money so I could go care less how much parts cost, but I don't.

Last time I posted amazon link for a good price on a part, he said that'll make price go up? I guess he meant, Amazon tracks how many people look at the link?
That doesn't make sense to me. I'm not accusing anybody, but maybe some people here don't need that part at the moment, but they don't want other to buy it and thus they can't get the same deal later. To me, point of forum is to help each other, not to be selfish.

Selfishness I guess. I'm all for helping members, it's just when you're a single father of two, a full time college student, and your only cars clutch is beginning to slip- you hope a deal like this last until you have enough to make the purchase. I'm sorry forums, please forgive me.

While it sounds that you're in fairly tough situation, when you make a statement that you did, it can be interpreted many ways.
Me and my wife are in stable financial situation, but we did come to US in 1996 as refugees from Bosnia with no money, had to pay back for Airfare, worked hard from day one (legal immigrants who paid taxes from day one) and never went on welfare even though we could.
I'm sorry but your situation doesn't even come close to hell that I and numerous people in Bosnia went through in stupid senseless Yugoslavian Civil War. That doesn't give me right to complain here and give excuses and it shouldn't you either.

Why exactly are we comparing hardships. Many have had it hard and many do. No need to say whos was worse or who had the most troubles. Honestly, this forum is to help eachother with advice and w.e it may be. I find a good deal. Ill pass it on. I would expect anyone to do the same. If not well thats fine keep it to urself, but to fight about it and compare is childish. Im looking for advice. In my opinion why not keep that the focus of this forum.

I agree. The only reason I told my circumstances to this crybaby is to show him that his complaints are ridiculous compared to some people went through. I'll call Amazon and ask them to save one set for him since he's obviously at the brink of starvation.

Anyway, back to clutches...
That video from Bav Auto is great. Even though it's a 530, it makes me feel more comfortable with this job.

The video from BV are really nice. Still a little confused on the clutch types and what has to be done differently for ones that are self adjusting and the ones that aren't. He mentions the conversion kits (dual mas to single piece) cost less and last much much longer. Can anyone on here confirm that? The only single piece I see on their site are the UUC's for 1600+

I looked at lots of clutches and settled on the stock dm flywheel with m5 clutch. All single mass flywheels induce some tranny noise at low rpms. Some dont mind it but others are not so keen on it. For a daily driver non track car i opted for the dm. Works very good. You need to really shell out some cash to get one of the nicer single mass set ups. Your on a budget. No?

lol I guess so. I planned on heading the M5 Clutch / 540 DM FW route, because that's what the car was originally set up with and because of the cost. Just curious about the once piece design though. In video 1 @ 13:30 he explains DM vs solid piece. He made it seem like a huge step up, saying it was a much smoother drive train operation and getting rid of clutch feel w/ premature ware.

I wonder if that play he shows in the DMFW could be responsible for the drive-train play my car has? I guess that motion in the DMFW takes the place of springs within the clutch disk itself.

I am on a budget but i believe im right around 1100-1400$ for clutch kit, flywheel, seals, fluids, other odds and ends installed. Ive got a local tech that will do the work for around just around 500$. Ive got 540$ i believe in m5 clutch, and 540 flywheel by luk. Self adjusting clutch. One question i do have is whether or not i should mod the cdv or delete it or neither ha. Thoughts?

just delete the CDV. While you're in there, I recommend refreshing the shift bushings & replacing the shift selector seal on the transmission.

Yes- get rid of the CDV or get the modded one with the guts removed. The whole CDV concept is a crime in my book.

On a worn, high mileage DM flywheel, the play is very noticeable. On a new one, it is not. That said, I do prefer the feel of a single mass flywheel with a sprung hub disc and I do not hear any 'gear rattle' with my UUC setup unless I really lug the engine in 4th or 5th gear at low speed. The LUK DM replacement parts are far more cost effective than any single mass conversion if those Amazon prices hold up.

I agree. Why buy a car that has that power in man. and want to have a "learners clutch". Its a powerful car yes, but its not anything that should be needed unless your 16yr old kid is learning. And even then it being delayed will dumby it down to where its too easy.
