View Full Version : I'm an idiot....

Ok so....
Changed oil, went to reset oil light like I always do (with a wire). Reset light successfully (pins 7 & 19), now the starter won't turn over. Trying to figure the best angles to start looking. Could I have burned up the starter? Easy fix if so. Starters are relatively cheap.

I don't see how resetting the oil service light could affect the starter.
I'd vote it's more likely to be either your battery is low, or your ignition switch is going bad.

I would assume you still have power to the rest of the car?

Yep. Everything else works fine. It's as if the car doesn't recognize the chip in the key anymore.

Battery is fine by all accounts, considering I had just driven the car for an hour or so and it's never had an issue with low voltage like my 97 has (massive electrical leak). I could put it on the charger to find out, but my mind (as much as I absolutely hate it) is pointing to the switch. Been there, done that with the 97. Had to replace the switch and it was quite a pain in the kiester.
Forgive me but I'm itching to say, "Yes, you are an idiot!"
Happy New Year to everyone!

You aren't the first person to blow a fuse by shorting the wrong pins at the DLC. Check fuses F15, F38 and F114.

Speaking as a former US Navy Corpsman, I think I am most qualified to assess the IQ of the creatures affectionately known as "grunts".

You mean 14, not 114, right? Been through both fuse banks, nothing yet. Going through again today with some sunlight to help in case I missed something with the flashlight last night.

Well, resetting the EML worked (disconnect battery, key in "on" position for 30 seconds), but that still begs to question what exactly happened. This doesn't bode well, IMO, if resetting the service light all of a sudden confuses the EML. There is something else afoot here that I have to diagnose. Going to do a little research and nag one of the BMW Service techs I know here (the only one at the dealership who knows jack about E39 electronics).

Well.... my tech bud can't figure it out. Going to get a reset tool just in case. Something happened, and it's going to bug me forever until I figure out what it was.

Sounds like you got lucky. F114 is the other fuse that supplies power to the DLC. If you didn't blow a fuse, the other possibilities are grounding or putting 12v on one of the communication lines at the DLC. Disconnecting battery forces all the modules to restart and clear the fault.

Lucky isn't the word! I'm still freaking out. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I think that an issue like that coming from a simple service light reset points to something nasty lurking under the bridge.

No problem. And I'll send it back to your place with a bill of parking tickets, speeding tickets, red light tickets, runaway/getaway from the police officer tickets, and a moose on a loose run.:D
