Lets go back to the beginning of summer. It was June, I just started to get into cars because I thought it was cool when my new friend with an Rx7 FC took me drifting in the mountains of Santa Barbara. He told me to be able to do anything close to what he was doing, then I had to get a RWD stick shift car. I didn't know jack squat about cars till i started looking around my neighborhood and taking down all of the cars on a notepad and looking in the window for a stickshift and looking up on google if it was RWD. One thing that I was told to look out for was a car that has just been sitting for a couple months. I then saw a nice BMW 323i Convertible on the side of the road that had been sitting for a year.133,000 miles, Blown speakers, polluted and brown back window, needs a new battery, top doesn't work for crap, blown stock suspension. What a great car to spend 3000$ on for a 16 year old who knows nothing about cars.

Here she is! Shelly, right after her first wash and me trying to take down the top after 2 hours of struggling.

Sooo, I soon found out what an open diff was and I realized that I could only get "sideways" in dirt or gravel… I basically went to every dirt lot i could find and created a smoke cloud whether people were there or not. I'm kind of an asshole if I really think about it. Spraying prius' with rocks in gravel lots, getting lemons thrown at my car when I'm sideways, getting chased by beefy high school when I'm fishtailing away through my dirt cloud of open diff, having to change my air filter once every two weeks, not to mention the terrible idea of taking the top down then doing donuts in dirt, I still have that dirty interior. I really must say that it's not the best way to learn to "control" my car, but doing it for 2 months straight definitely helped me.

Here is what it was like: http://youtu.be/yE0EhoZAqAw

easy fix, get a 3.15 lsd off ebay or the for sale section of this forum.

you're welcome

you stop that right now.

find your local drift body.
buy a helmet . and save your pennies for a roll bar or make friends that has a welder and make yourself a roll bar for safety sake.

either buy a lsd or weld your factory open. i would probably try to source a factory clutch lsd if you're dailying it.

someone from cali chime in please.

So I got to weld the diff. Took a bit of time to get the damn CV boots just to get to the torx's! I ended up using a diamond cutter to cut through the clamps.
http://i.imgur.com/5D6DSw9.jpg

and I lifted it out of my car on a jack on a slightly slanted hill. Had a block of wood the size of a fence to block the front tires and stop the car from rolling down and killing me.
http://i.imgur.com/ircER0s.jpg

We took the diff out and took it apart in a bucket so the oil would all drain out. this helped alot when taking the diff apart. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FymJmCbtEk
We then got the spider gears out and took it to a friend. He put it in his steam cleaner, he welded it with a shop welder, then sand blasted(covered the bearings as well) it with a different type material (i forgot what its called but it doesnt hurt anything) we then cleaned it for little balls that would get in the gears and ^&*( my car. Then we had a good old welded diff. We then went home and put the diff together, we then realized the paper gasket wasnt working out so we just silicone gasketed the diff to seal the top off and let it dry like this over night.
http://i.imgur.com/J1ouFtH.jpg

Here is what the diff looked like apart.

The workplace:
http://i.imgur.com/YNesdYd.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/wgLezTv.jpg

Aaaaaand We also decided to take off the muffler to see what it sounded like once we got the diff back in. I think it sounds pretty good and ricey. I did have trouble with the muffler sagging and hitting the ground though so I thought to just tie it with rope that i cut up at my buddies house (i think it was used for a hockey goal or something) but yeah, its pretty ghetto.

http://i.imgur.com/L4NZ8xO.jpg

aaaaaand so the welded diff is definitely making an impact on my life. Time for some 20$ used tires!! Damn, I was already there last week for two rear tires!!!

So I ended up doing some thinking. And I decided to try something extra ghetto for myself considering I have nothing else left to do and I am kinda stuck working on my car on the cheap. Sooooo I went to OSH bought these items:

Black Primer-3$
Black Gloss-4$
Clearcoat-4$

and with these four things that I spent 11$ on. I spray painted my rims!
It also didn't turn out too bad! :D

We started off with duct tape to cover the tires, then we put clothes from out little garage around it.

http://i.imgur.com/boNuzJe.png

We then got to primer it and gloss black it. And They turned out quite nice!

For a camaro? Also instead of race lands I'm grabbing Megan lowering springs in a week or so. Then I'm thinking 5 point harness buckets. (What are good buckets?) and then I'll just weld a roll bar in it

Is this a good quality roll bar? Has anyone tried it?

No haha, I cut the cv boot clamps to get to the torx.

So recently I have had to deal with some issues especially from the welded diff! There is an 18mm bolt that holds the diff to the subframe and it seemed to be loose because every time i got sideways or shift i could hear the diff clunk up and down. I tried to take out the bolt, but it snapped halfway through the threading. So now my diff is holding a threaded bolt inside of it. For a ghetto fix I ended up prying the diff up so i could thread in a couple threads of the broken off piece and I duck taped it down. I think what I am going to do is take out the diff and take it to a machinist to have it taken out. Any suggestions?

Here is a pic from a diff swapping tutorial. with the bolt i'm dealing with circled.

http://i.imgur.com/15Vq74S.jpg

I also found 3 steelies at a local bmw shop. The shop owner said I could get them for 50$. Two of them have tires. So Woohoo!! In about a month and a week I should be welding in a rollcage and grabbing lowering springs to head to willow springs as well! I just got a job that pays 15$ per hour under the table.

Also is there anything bad about lowering springs that i should know about?

Once again, is this rollcage any good or should I find a place to make one for my car?

Why the hell do you need to cut the cv boot clamps to remove the bolts for axles? Do you have a difficult time reading instructions or is this just cool trendy way to be s13 hella flush and drifttarded?

If I ever see a car like yours hooning on the streets in norcal I will call the police to remove shit from the road.

your diff bolt probably loosened up because you are on stock diff bushings that are blown to shit, and that bolt is single-shear. meaning it won't tolerate the nonsense you're giving it without

A: solid diff bushings
or
B: reinforcement

I would recommend the former, and a new 10.9 grade bolt for the diff.

An easy update for the diff bolt is to drill the old bolt out of our casing and get a longer bolt next time with a nut on the end instead I threading it into the diff casing. I found that way to be stronger then threading it into the diff casing

leave the poor kid alone we all did stupid stuff in our teens.

save it for the track bro

either a extract that broken dif bolt or b drill though it and nut and bolt it . also the dif/ subframe bushing are probably to blame for this so save some scratch and buy something firmer
not a bad time to do some reinforcing of the chassis as well.

Okay so here is the plan. Thursday morning, me and a buddy are taking out the differential and the axles and hopefully putting the diff on a drill press to drill out a bigger threading if the threading is stripped and also to put a larger bolt in there so it wont happen again. (this buddy of mine has done this before and he told me it works out well) I will also be taking it with the Axles to a shop to have the PROPER cv boot clamp put on to the cv boot... I will also ask some people if my stock diff bushings are blown. We will see, thanks for the input though.

The reason I had to pull over to the side of the road and duct tape the bolt in is so the bolt would not come loose for a couple miles considering it was already stripped and i need to get my car to a place where i could park it till thursday morning. I am borrowing a friends car because if I don't and I keep driving my car till thursday then I will probably have to buy a new drive shaft.

myself and nearby motorists are glad to hear the the duct-taped diff bolt was temporary. Lots of hate in here... I would recommend the former, and a new 10.9 grade bolt for the diff.

Just so i could get my car going through the weekend. On saturday me and a buddy went to the hardware store for a temporary grade 8.8 bolt. Then we would wait for the weekdays so we could go to the dealership and get a higher grade bolt and put it in. The not so great grade 8.8 bolt snapped again yesterday after it had been raining for the first time in 2 months. I had to slide in the rain. My buddy and me did some tandem donuts for the first time! But the gopro wasnt recording... we only got a 350z with an open diff trying to do donuts and some mountain driving to the snow where we found a little dirt circle and dirt paths where we drove. My friend then got his car stuck after sliding around a couple times. I then had to push it out of the way with my car. resulting in this.
It was stupid of me to use the corner of my car in the first place to push him out. I probably should have backed into him.

http://i.imgur.com/JlDAH8i.png
http://i.imgur.com/ewSlzqO.png
http://i.imgur.com/xOjNxSS.png

Anyways I was driving back home down the mountain when i heard a clunk in the back of my car, which happened to be the bolt. Thus jacking up my car and putting it back in just to get home.
Onto the Diff bushings and such. Should i replace all 3 bushings or will i be fine with just the front bushing? I'm probably going to get the M14 front diff bushing from AKG. and a 10.9 1.5 m14 bolt that fits a 7 series but should now fit the new bushing that i will grab.

How about you actually fix what is broken and go to an event, in a parking lot, where you can't hit or kill anything. Perhaps you'll learn something from someone who actually knows what you're doing, not your sweet friend who thinks they do and then crashes into a snowbank.

And so the struggle continues!!
http://i.imgur.com/l2P0vMR.png

We start with dropping the differential to easy out the second broken bolt! Well as I was undoing the torx bolts I didn't get one of the sockets exactly snug before i started undoing the torx. And I then stripped the torx. I have tried the rubber band trick, using vice grips, filing it down to a 10mm and then 9mm. Nothing worked out.

http://i.imgur.com/oNwbeNd.png

I ended up dropping the diff anyway to get a better look and working space on the torx.

http://i.imgur.com/pVbzQvw.png

I then thought that It would be a good idea to just take out the axle itself and the diff to a shop to have the bolt taken out. And while doing so I tried pushing the diff back with my legs as i attempted to pull the axle out after getting the 30mm 12point off. so this is what happened.

http://i.imgur.com/rt8rWOX.png

http://i.imgur.com/3WZX1RX.png

the part the connects to the inside of the spider gears just came out, so I just took the diff to the shop to have it easy outed.

My plan is to take the differential to a machine shop and drill and punch the M14 size into the m12 size for the new bolt. I will then borrow my friends air compressor and a shops air hammer and ill air hammer the axle out and take that to the shop to get the proper clamps and such on it and have the torx replaced. After all of this I am going to drop my subframe, considering that I have to replace the front bushing which is connected to the differential carrier, but the only way to do that is to have it taken to a hydrolic press to have the bushing replaced.

Any suggestions?

Camdinan please stfu, he is a kid and starting out like most of us drifters did, hooning around parking lots and deserted roads before going to drift events. Any drifter saying they've never done street drifting is a liar. He will learn quick after receiving a few reckless driving tickets and realizing that drift events are a much cheaper alternative to street drifting. I know i did. I give him a credit for doing his own work and having a semi-right idea. He just needs to be pointed in the right direction. You sir are just jealous kid got more balls and possibly skills then you but it's understandable you're suffering from "garage queen syndrome"

Taking off the subframe! (easy part)

So my buddy esierra30 came on over with some of his tools and i borrowed my neighbors air compressor.

http://i.imgur.com/HONAtrM.png
http://i.imgur.com/ha1m71M.png

First thing we did was take out the e brake cable from the cabin, take off the brake calipers, and undo the ABS and brake cables.

http://i.imgur.com/DMtLBYJ.png

Then we took the impact and unscrewed the 4 18mm sockets in the middle holding up the diff carrier and then the 6 18mm bolts for both trailing arms. After that we took a metal bar and pryed down the subframe.
He then left once it was out and I took out the diff carrier.http://i.imgur.com/pyr361l.png
http://i.imgur.com/yEsk0T2.png

The next day I took the diff carrier and the right part of the subframe to granny's garage and we had the torx bolts head hacksawed off and the bolt slide out easy, then we pressed the bushing out of the subframe and pushed in the new one with white lithium grease.

Putting the subframe back in.... alone

Well here was the worst part of my Monday, I started at 4:30 and ended at 12:30 to get it all back together. First I started with dragging the subframe under the car.
http://i.imgur.com/NLuRi1U.png

I then grabbed the jack and jacked it up till i could steadily push it into 2 of the bolts sticking out from the car. I put one of the jackstands sideways so i could replace the jack.

http://i.imgur.com/mErEUG5.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/1e3ZhH0.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/ny79Gzb.png
http://i.imgur.com/PP8USIL.png

After all of this crap I impacted the subframe bolts into the car. I then had to deal with brake calipers falling apart on me and me having to put them back together, my lower arm for the sides of the subframe wasn't bolted in correctly so I had to disconnect them from the brake/trailing arm to get them in place and slide a bolt in there to thread it in, springs kept jumping out of their place and rolling away from me. It then got dark... I resorted to Christmas lights and a lamp to make sure I could finish this in one day.

http://i.imgur.com/BGI2k2q.png

The brake bolts were the most annoying thing to deal with EVER

http://i.imgur.com/dGp3SzG.png

Anyways, once I was done and I jacked the diff inside the car I was ready to go. I put on my spares and I drove all around town to test out the new fix. No more clunking in the rear!!!!!

And I certainly got sideways every place that I could...

Hows that Camdinans3?

I used neversieze all 3 times I dropped my diff last year and not once didn anything come loose at an event or on the street... Maybe invest in some decent wrenches so you can tighten shit to more then 5 ft/lbs...

I'm not happy... I see no brodude video... This thread is useless with out more brodude activity...

The reason there isn't much brodude activity is because my trailing arm bushings were done for and my axle bolts kept falling out due to being stretched. However tomorrow I am picking up 12 new bolts and washers and the trailing arm bushings. By Saturday my trailing arm bushings and axle bolts should be put in and I'll be back on the road! (with 4 new/old tires as well) Did I also mention I bent a steelie? Curbs are the worst!!

I also didn't realize why my car was wobbling up and down one day and I took my rims off to switch em and found half my tire looking like this...

the bolts stretched? get a god damn torque wrench for god sakes.

and i think your rtabs being "done for" is a severe understatement. And there must have been some serious brodude activity if you slid into a curb and bent a wheel.

A torque wrench wouldn't fix anything brochacho. After taking the bolts in and out of the car about 4 times they begin to stretch and they will just come right out. Also I did some research and found out that because my rtabs are blown, the car frame takes the beating from driving like a true dude bro. And the serious dude bro driving did occur during the rain storms last weekend. Which also led to the bent steelie

If you do not understand what a torque wrench is, or factory torque specs for a structural part of your car, then you should not work on your car. it should be impounded until a mechanic inspects it.

Yeah except he is going to hurt someone being that clueless.

I think drifting is cool....in a controled environment with a car that is properly maintained to do so.

This kid has no idea what he is doing, drifting on the street with a car that is literally falling apart and on corded tires. So you tell me, would you feel ok with him being your neighbor sliding around and smashing into curbs?

I don't care if he chooses to be a dudebro in his free time while not in a 3000lb car. it does bother me when he doesn't fix things correctly and jokes about it and then screws around on the street.

Regardless, still waiting on my dudebro video. don't keep me waiting.

He chased me down in the neighborhood, pointed a revolver in my face and told me he was an ex Navy Seal and that he would kill everyone in the car if I ever did that again. So, next time I launched off the hill I used my Dads F250, different vehicle (covert), much better suspension travel. What I'm trying to say is; if youre going to drift on the street, dont do it in front of a crazy ex Navy Seal. If you need to drift while in the presence of a Seal, use your dads car. Seriously tho, be careful man. You haters need to lay off this kid. Be helpful, dont dump on him. Thats not constructive for anyone.

Well I haven't mentioned it to the thread, but when I first welded the diff me and the rx7 guy decided to take the muffler off and the top down and go drive. We found a little lot in front of this farmers property and we decided to do donuts on it. He then ended up running at us with a shotgun. My friend jumped in the car and we drove out pretty fast. Then someone stood in the middle of the road to stop the car cause my car was too loud and it gave the farmer time to get in his f350 dually and catch up to us. It was about a 10 minute chase and it came to running for our lives cause the guy was shouting death threats as he was chasing us through neighborhoods. It didn't really seem like he wanted to just talk and we came to something like this.
http://i.imgur.com/K8QQTJl.png

Now obviously an f350 dually diesel truck is going to take a while to get to where i was so we were able to turn around faster than he saw us at the turn around and escape the madness.

We have a video of it from doing donuts to the guy stopping us in the middle of the road. but that's on an iphone that i have somewhere around the house. I'll see if i can find it and post the video.

Hey all, sorry I haven't posted in the past couple weeks. Here is what has been going on recently and what I will have soon!

Check engine light! Uh oh ( driving with this for the past 2 weeks) 3 codes
1. Cylinder 3 misfire
2. Small evap leak
3. Large evap leak

498142

Brake light failure, have had this since I got the car but I am going to get it fixed in a week or two.
498143

Gosh I hate speaker wires!!! It keeps plopping down when I'm driving and my feet get caught. When I put it back up I end up moving the whole underside cover of the steering wheel which also holds my clutch down when I push it down and I have to kick the underside to move it so I can drive normally

498144

Been driving on this bent Steelie because all other rims have no tires with tread.

498145

The steelie tread... #drivable

498147

My tire that I didn't expect to bulge and destroy my alignment cause it had some tread

498148

I also still haven't put in the rtabs

498146

So this weekend I am putting my rtabs in, next week ill buy some springs an possibly stock struts and fixing the brake light circuit. Ill also change my oil an put in the plugs. Other than that the past 2 days it has rained in Santa Barbara. So it's been fun sliding with these problems all around town and in the mountains all night loooooong. I love watching old people and moms drop their jaws as I slide a wet intersection. Good to be back >:D

I don't care that you are going to go to tracks...a cage in a daily without wearing a helmet is STUPID. You are safer in an accident without a cage than you are with a cage and no helmet. Head on cage impact is not a good thing for any species. A cage IMO should only be considered if you are planning on running tandem...make your car more solid and drift worthy FIRST.

Something tells me many things. Just a hunch though. Cooling system, rest of the bushings and from what I can see; everything. If you're worried about how expensive new springs and shocks are you shouldnt be getting a cage.

And I agree about the cage, I'm assuming you won't be getting the proper padding for it either.

So as not to be an accomplice to murder, I enthusiastically encourage you to take your shop to a proper BMW indy to do a full runover on your car, have everything fixed such that you could pass a tech inspection. Also - if you're going to street drift, do it when NOBODY is around to see you. Who cares if you get caught, that's your problem, but for the love of god don't kill a bystander. You don't want that on your conscience, and if you think you don't care a reckless driving is a lot less damage to your purse then

If I can get it out for 3k I would be grateful considering the amount of beating I've done to it. Currently has a bad coil pack so I am misfiring a lot when I drive around town.I have a check engine light, not sure of the damage caused by misfires, but oh well. If I do find a cheap lsd before i sell the car, I will keep the car and lower it and drift it till it burns to the ground. But If I sell it, I will get a coupe or four door e36 named Pelly and beat her as long as i'm alive. or an 85 rx7 gsl-se and motorcycle then mountain drive.

Also I should be finishing the dudebro video soon. We found the SD card like 2 days ago with the rest of the footage.

Well I have officially sold Shelly for 2500 to a sophomore in high school. I bought her on 8/11/13 and I sold her on 8/11/14 She was really good to me I gotta say. Taught me a lot of about e36's, cars, and car guys.

E36: Awesome car to drive, I don't think i'll find another like shelly. E36's are a ***** to work on... But damn are they reliable and strong.
Cars: They're fun and I like drifting, so I will be looking for another car. Possibly an e36, maybe an rx7, miata, or e30. However from my year of shelly driving I have also realized that cars are dangerous as $^&*. So the next car will hopefully be trackable and safe. Although it probably won't be.
Car guys: Only a few guys actually drive their cars, The others are stance boys and boy do I hate them a lot.

So if you can find another car to take the title of Kelly. Then let me know.

Here was her after he last wash!!!! Oh man this was emotional.

Hey all,

It's been a while since I've been on the bimmerforums. Not sure if anyone ever wondered what happened to that beautiful drift missle, but boy it reeeeeeeally went down hill with the new owner. Things were not lookin too bright. In chronological order here's how it went down:

1. The coolant reservoir broke in plastic chunks and he replaced Tstat, water pump, and the reservoir.
2. Then the welds in the diff broke.
3. The guy bought a used M3 subframe from another person in LA
4. Bought 18 inch 2008 3 series alloys to fit the subframe, which they rubbed the inside of the tire well. So...
5. Sold those, bought 16s.
6. Didn't put diff fluid in the LSD, drove the car, and shredded the diff.
7. Tried to build an LSD with some other guy, ended up wasting his time and bought a $2000 LSD after failing.
8. Driverside of the rear subframe ripped out of sheet metal.

So now Shelly sits in his garage. Sold the car about a month before things didn't really work out mechanically.

HOWEVER, DONT FRET!! I have a new 4dr e36, runs like a fat girl juiced up on a triple espresso shot. She rolls aggressively down the mountains of Santa Barbara like a fat girl rolls down a flight of stairs. A 325i converted to an M3. We can leave it at that.

Let me know if you want more because,

+1, this is like reading a play-by-play of my life during the first few years after i got my license.

what i have a hard time understanding though, is how this is one of the best threads ya'll have been hit with. by r3v standards, this thread was pretty tame

So I had this car over summer and I went off to college for the semester. It has been sitting for quite some time!!

What does that mean???

More problems!!! :D

559563
559564
559565

Had a flat on the front left tire, changed to the spare so I am atleast mobile. My battery has been getting drained out from my hazard lights randomly turning on even when the car is off. The hazards end up blinking faster and faster until the battery dies. I replaced the hazard light button(lol is that the switch?). When I put one of the signal indicators on, the lights seem to blink as fast as the hazards left off at blinking.

dude. bro. we have been eagerly awaiting your return.

sounds like you've either got a random power wire shorting to the power wire feeding the blinkers, or something crazy is going on with your flasher relay

need more deets for maor diag bro

The second coming of the bro.

^ agreed. pull the relay and test.

I also assume there is a major rats nest in there around the headlights. Not sure if that car came stock with ambers or not but maybe the PO switched to clears or had HID's in there at some point and put them back to stock. who knows....

I'd also be very concerned with that rust on the shock tower.....and whats that box on top of the fuse box?
