View Full Version : Tramlining?

hi, love my 2001 525 sport, but recently i've noticed that the front end has a tendency to tramline, or thats what i'd call it; it feels a little imprecise and nervous at town speeds and will often hook up on a white line or bump? I always seem to be making small adjustments and corrections. I did wonder if my tyres (Good Year Eagle F1 II's), which are getting low, are to blame? Or is it time to change springs and dampers, I'm guessing it on the originals still (M Tech II?) That leads me into what to replace them with, which seems fraught too!! Thanks

I've had tires cause this problem before (Falken Ziex). Do you have any other wheels/tires you could throw on the front to see if the problem stops?
I upgraded to Michelin Pilot Super Sports and the problem went away instantly!
On another note, you could always check your suspension for play. Springs and dampers will likely have nothing to do with this problem. More likely would be your rear ball joints or control arms, or bushings in the front end.

I had F1s. They do tend to tramline when nearly worn out.
Carefully examine the suspension and steering components for play, esp rubber bushings. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DT42&mospid=47541&btnr=31_0869&hg=31&fg=05

Thank you guys, its great to be able to post a question and get such helpful answers! Now I think back I seem to remember the previous tyres (Dunlop Maxx Sport I think) being similarly wayward when worn out. I dont have any other wheels / tyres, but I'm planning on taking her down to my favourite BMW independent for a service soon, so will ask him to take a look too. Thanks again though!

Worn tires are usually the culprit for me.
