We did get a wee bit of snow the week prior to the major icing, but we didn't get out in it due to the layer of underlying ice that came before the snow.
We always seem to get ice and then the snow, which means we don't even get up the driveway let alone down the road. :(

I know my DSC is working correctly... but ice is still ice,, especially when going about 40 mph (limit is 55 mph is good weather)... there was no way I was going to go faster..... yet there are those who think physics do not apply to them... luckily the day I chose there was no storm, only sanded roads and what was left on the sides... from the plows, and lots of frozen lakes..

DSC does give you a better chance of successfully navigating poor road conditions but it is no substitute for common sense.

Oh yeah definitely, traction control isn't a substitute for good ol common sense lol.. didn't go over 40mph on that drive home which is normally about 10 min (took close to 20 that day). Gotta love snow :shifty

If you are looking for something that has a good wear rating for dry roads, don't go for the ws60s. They are about the softest tire this side of a racing slick. Their softness is part of what gives the tire the ability to bend and give you grip in the cold.

Bridgestone now makes a version of the Blizzak called the lm60, it is more of an all season tire that does very well in the snow. This to me is what it sounds like you are looking for.

I personally have a set of Blizzak WS70 tires on my M5, however I live in a place where there is typically snow on the road for 5 month out of the year.

Thanks for for the feedback. Did some research on the LM60 and it seems like it would be perfect for a dedicated winter setup. Only negative reviews I read were from people criticizing dry performance in terms of high speed handling. Not a major concern.

It is a snow tire, why should any body expect that it perform well in high speed handling maneuvers. When I switched between my summer tires and my winters on the M5, there was a very noticeable difference in handling. There was also a big difference in dry traction as I can get the traction control to kick in in 4th gear just by punching the throttle with the winter tires.

Exactly. That's why I don't consider it a major concern. I have summer tires I can basically use year-round here in San Diego but, each winter, I make a few long road trips to the mountains (Tahoe, Utah, Colorado, etc) and would like a tire that can handle the miles and possible snow at the final destination.

Snow and ice can actually scratch the clear coat. The tool can scratch also. They both can cause damage.

Technically, anything that touches the paint can scratch it. Even the softest towel.

Snow usually doesn't create problems unless you neglect to wash your car during the winter months. At least that has been my personal experience.

As for how much time and the environment ages your clear coat, I think we all know keeping our cars pristine over time is a losing battle.

Two things fine silica particles (essentially "powdered sand") do is invade your under hood areas as well as foul your air filter. Things to watch for sure. I like to rinse my car and undercarriage off as much as possible during the winter months, temperature allowing of course. I never get her wet when the day stays below freezing as it wreaks havoc with my rear driver's side door.

LOL.

People often ask me why I want to live in Erie with our crazy winters. I reply that our weather is great. We don't have hurricanes, tornadoes, forest fires, or really an sort of weather you would call a natural disaster.
Snow is fun, as well as quite beautiful.

Yup, same here. I've worked for 2 companies that were in CA for many years and been out there maybe 2-3 times a year, never felt a shaker.
We only have 3-4 snow storms a year and generally not as big as the one we just had.

How do our E39s put up with the snow, in terms of traction and all that

If you know how to drive in it, ours cars (with the proper tires) do very well.

Amen.

I usually take off traction control when driving in snow. Proper throttle control beats dsc in my opinion for snow driving.

I do leave it on when driving in the snow on the highway though.

Ironically, the car made it out of the parking lot okay. Company car failed horribly, and the truck made it about 15 feet before getting stuck:rolleyes

I find it funny when people in the south get snow and it shuts down your cities. Apparently for this year I live in the snowiest city in the US, Erie, PA. I would honestly be happy if winter were over. 5 months of snow really does get tiresome.

Yep, a little tiny bit of snow and we're shutting down immediately for two to three days. Ridiculous to be honest. We ought to be ashamed of ourselves when we look what's life up in the northern regions and we see it's just another day in 'maurica.

What's infuriating is that even in our neck of the woods they are starting to treat every 3-4" snowfall like a major natural disaster. Cancelling school and closing services a day in advance etc. The media of course loves to hype up the BS and make every baby storm into a "snowpocalypse" crisis even when there's hardly any chance of anything major.

They closed schools and the airport last week the night before a storm, I had a flight cancelled and was stuck in Europe.. turns out at it was 4" at most. Closer to 2-3". Big nothing.

It's damn embarrassing. We used to take winter as winter and roll with it. Wake up in the morning, deal with it, it's New England winter. Canadians should be ridiculing us.

Absolutely. And, then you see people harrying themselves to Harris Teeter, Food Lion, etc. etc. to super grocery stores to get dozen packs of milk, eggs, breads, chocolate bars, drinks, etc. etc. to prepare themselves in advance when it hadn't even started snowing. Just a tiny bit of snow or just a sight of it and that's it. The whole city is in chaotic mode. Everyone is trying to leave early for home, traffic jams everywhere, schools, offices, shops closed down, ............. yada yada, blah blah blah .....all because of a possible two inch snow!!

In your defense your infrastructure is not there to support the snow fall of this kind. Our municipalities have no problem budgeting 2 000 000$ for snow removal. No city in Florida, Texas or Georgia can justify buying snow plows and salters for the odd time it snows this much.

However I am jealous you all get to drive your cars now. Mine is in the garage while I drive the winter beater.

Well thats totes true of the Southern boys, but us in New England? Yeah we got plows and sand and salt piles and the whole setup. Been doin' it for 100 years. Why last few years we've gotten all pussified, I have no idea.

+1. It's quite funny when they shutdown everything if they see little snow. Last winter I drove 3 trips in blizzards with my 540i. Each trip was about 300 miles. During each of those weather channels were telling us avoid driving due to adverse driving conditions. I've yet to see weather I wouldn't dare to drive. Granted, driving in snow takes some practice.

With proper studded winter tires e39 is a great winter car. I have to agree having 5 months of snow isin't as fun as one might think. The only upside is that I can drift everyday during winter. :smoke3

I would have been pulling my hair out, if it took me 9 hours to drive 40 miles. :D One of the tricks of driving in a snow storm is to keep going above 40 mph (disclaimer: I take no responsibility, if you crash and die because you were driving over 40 mph, driving in snow requires skill :stickoutt). You might ask why? Well that is fast enough that the snow won't hit the windshield. Wipers will freeze and resemble icicles, if you drive slowly. When they turn into icicles they are useless.

With proper studded winter tires e39 is a great winter car.

These 2 things are key.

I lived in the mountains of Vermont for over 10 years, and consistently the born and bred locals would bomb around in something like a RWD beater Buick Century w sand in the trunk and studded snows and just motor past the flatlanders in their fancy SUVs with all-seasons who'd slid off into a ditch and were completely puzzled as to why.

W the E39, I was surprised how well the car does w proper new snows to be honest. With modern tire technology studded isnt really required unless you want to be a mountain pass all conditions renegade frontiersman, but it is the extra step above and beyond.

And LSD is a huge upgrade too but only if you have the other 2.

Granted you can drive with non studded winter tires, but when the weather gets really bad the studded tires are just way better. As I said I've yet to see weather that would stop me from driving. If I need to be somewhere I'll drive regardless of blizzards. LSD would be great upgrade, but it isin't cheap.

I've driven plenty in snow with summer tires. It ain't that bad, if the traffic isin't jammed. If it is well, good luck. :D One of the downfalls of e39 in snow is that it gets stuck quite easily with summer tires, if your constantly stopping. Japanese FWD are much better due to having 70% weight on the drive wheels. Last fall I drove my e39 in snow for over a week with summer tires and the only real problem was when I entered a parking lot that had 3 inches of fresh now on top of ice. I stopped to reverse my car and bam, I got stuck. Had to rock the car back and forth to get going again. Other than that driving wasn't too bad.

Yeah well, Georgia wasn't prepared at all. The roads weren't salted or anything so over a few hours, they were covered in thick sheets of ice. It was even dangerous to walk on. lol. I use to live in NY and had no problems driving the e39 up there even on bald tires.

Thank god they rarely salt roads here. It just makes a bad situation worse. Trucks aren't required to use winter tires here, so they just drive with summer tires year round. As I said previously momentum is the key. Constant stop and go traffic is total nightmare with summer tires.

I dunno what other MA members think, but I think MassDOT has been outstanding this winter. They've been getting the roads sanded whenever there is potential for a snow storm or for any water to freeze into black ice; all very quickly. I have all seasons on my car until the spring when I get a set of new summer tires, and I have had no problems in terms of drive-ability. Will get a pic up in a bit!

Honestly I don't think they've been too heavily tested yet - we've had more false-alarms than real major slams so far, and as far as I remember, we haven't had one of those nasty massive ice storms yet. And early season when they have tons of budget and salt it's always easy, its when they use up the budget and we get into Feb/March storms that they start to fall down usually...

The sea she is angry...
http://www.j2c3.com/misc/BMW/540snow6.jpg

OK and confession time - the next 2 pics are of the OH SHIT moment. Drove out onto a long "pier" way up above the ocean.

Over confidence in the new LSD/Snow setup lead me to drive past where the plows had stopped and out to the end... Car was going amazingly great through the deep heavy unplowed stuff until I drove out of the only other tracks up there, and then stopped like a moron.

And like a bigger moron - I stopped across-the-slope, not facing down.

I thought for a while I was calling a tow truck for sure. Highsided on packed heavy dense snow, front end plowing and front tires mired deep making it hard for the rears to push the front.

But, after a fair few minutes of rocking and LSD wheelspinning to dig down to some grip in the rear, I first got it rocking, and then got it moving again. Had one long stint headed down hill and was looking good, but then the rear started stepping out, and I was basically spinning the rears at something like 30mph while moving at a crawl down the hill so I eased off for a few seconds which was a MISTAKE, and only left me stuck again, requiring another tedious rock-out session.

That said I DID get it out and off the deep nasty, and the LSD+Snows is shockingly good for a RWD car... I just have to remember it's not my Quattro...

Nawww. The angry sea she is still wet.

During the last hard cold snap the marshes and inlets started to freeze though, as well as spray on the rocks in places where the rocks are cold enough to freeze the spray - that's always cool. Looks like DD donut glaze on everything.

been snowed in for 3 days,, suppose to keep raining now and wash it away.. just way too high of snow! 2 feet in 3 days Oregon!,, friends with 4wd are helping knock it down, but still can't clear it enough for my 2001 530i. Just have to wait for another day of rain...

the other day I backed out of our garage and it high centered on the snowed had to clear a path with a shove to get it back into the garage.. our driveway is a very long country road type driveway,, ain't even getting close to it.. we went dear hunting, and had to shovel out our 4 wheel drive out at one point.. but we were all ok... drove through the open fields in the back country... up and down a few small hills.. saw a flock of turkeys but was to hard to see after dark,,a little fog set it.. but otherwise, the snow really lights up the night! Freezing rain took over yesterday evening,,,

Lucky you, I got to work on Saturday and it started pouring down snow and then freezing rain. I had no problems with getting stuck until I got to this slanted driveway at the exit of my building before getting onto the main road. There were cars coming so I had to stop and the back of my car was still on the hilly part so I got stuck :( I couldent get up so I reversed since there was a car behind me and I was going to take an alternate road... well I got stuck when I backed up too much into another hilly driveway.

Ironically, some massive red Dodge extended cab pulled up just 2 minutes after me getting stuck and told me he saw me get stuck so he turned around to come help me. He was telling me he and his wife were just driving around the area pulling out stranded cars, AWESOME! A couple quick pushes got me un-stuck so I thanked them for their help and got home through all the slush with no further problems.

Well, it snowed pretty good yesterday and it also rained too overnight. It was more of a freezing rain. This morning I had to go and pick up my mother from work. She worked tirelessly since yesterday morning till today. She worked more than 24 hours actually. Many people were stuck at work or at homes unable to go anywhere. Saw a lot of cars stranded and left on the highways too. My brother sent me a text message saying that there were around 68 accidents happened in Cary. Anyways, went outside to start her up and start cleaning. Took a lot of pictures today, so enjoy!

Car in flames, eh? Didn't hear about this one.

On my way back on the outer beltline I saw more cars left to the side of the road. There were a lot of them left on the fast lane between exit 11 and 10 and saw more on the shoulders pretty much all the way to exit 5 which is where I took off.

yeah with the current setup the 540 is near unstoppable UNLESS i have to come to a stop. starting from a standing stop in really bad conditions / deep snow / steep slope is the only place I have concerns. When d-bags make me stop unnecessarily on a slippery spot it's real irritating...

They aren't clickable and the problem is Dropbox 'hotlinking' requires something else - I dunno I don't use it but there's something you as a user has to do differently. They will work fine alone but not if you stick on a page on another website aka like a post like this.

Yep, still don't see anything yet. Not sure if it is to do with your limited post counts or not.

I'll try again when I get home. Sorry. :-(

I can open them here if I "right click" and select "view picture"

I would have gladly traded my m parallels for your style 65's. Had them on my '88 735i, looked saweet, imo.

Thanks. I'm liking the purple, daytona purple?
