My new to me 1999 540 sport needed some work done and after getting it back I get this check coolant level. I have run it with heater full and topped it bled it from the "screw" on top of or near expanion tank tell only coolant runs out. whay am I still getting that message and how can I fix. Car does not run hot. 12 oclock no matter how long I run it for.

Get used to it! Probably seeping out somewhere. Cooling systems can be suspect in our cars. Hopefully just needed bleeding, but I would check all hose and connections thoroughly; and the back of the intake. My '99 needs to be topped off with about 1/2 pint( less really...) of coolant every 3-4 months; I do not know where it goes. No leaks anywhere; and my whole cooling system has been replaced..

Check reservoir. Sensor is located within.

Smell the engine while it is running. If you have a small leak, chances are you'll smell something 'sweet' while the engines running at temp (ethylene glycol smells and tastes sweet). Thoroughly inspect all hoses, joints, water pump, rear accumulator, VALLEY PAN gasket (super common problem on M62/TU engines), expansion tank, radiator, etc for any signs of leakage or smell.

Before doing all of this, I would check the reservoir to make sure the float sensor is intact and working.

Have you remove the cap and looked at the level stick when the engine was cold?
If the level is correct either your sensor at the bottom of the tank is defective or the magnet has come off the stick.

How do I check those? where is magnet? I'm not a novice but I didn't now about the magnet. Thank you guys.

The magnet is on the stick inside the tank, you can't really check it.
What was the level?
The sensor comes out of the bottom of the tank, a 1/4 turn and it pulls straight down after you remove the connector.
The sensor is not in the coolant so it won't spill out when you remove the sensor.
