So about a year ago i picked up a bone stock e36 318i from a guy that was about a day away from the scrapper. Bought it with intent to drift, so put a motor in, did coilovers and welded the diff with a hydro ebrake. Slid around and learned some basics.

And now on to the new car. Decided I needed more power for next year as the 1.8 sucked. Lucky for me a local guy I know crashed his M3 into a wall and decided he no longer wanted 4 cars so after a few trades I ended up with it in my driveway. It wasnt pretty but it was gonna be worth it.

The car came with a few sweet upgrades that I wasnt fully aware of when i bought it. Full uuc exhaust, H&R coilovers, H&R rear camber arms, and upgraded motor mounts. My first mod when i was bored was to paint all the aero matching because the front bumper was mangled and I like the of my old car more then the solid red. So i scuffed everything and painted it satin black.

And this is how it currently sits.

486216 486217 486218 486219

Quite happy with the outcome and still have a bunch of things to clean up before its a finished product and ready for race season but for now Im happy with the result. And for a car that Im into for 400$ its not too shabby.

thanks for looking!

Thanks! I suck at making build threads here apparently haha. Definatly excited to get out on track. Too much winter here... It's tempting to get it done and make the trip out to evergreen and go get some early season practice in. Gonna machine up some rack spacers tomorrow and try and get a tiny bit more angle out of the car before I can afford the slr kit. Looking at the clearance between frame and tire, I should be able to get away with a 225-235 tire with some slip on spacers @20mm. 17x7.5 et21(after spacer) gonna pull the front end off again tomorrow and paint my frame rails and replace all the belts and the broken pulley.

You should be fine running the 235's, My old roommate is running 235's on 15mm spacers if i remember right. Good luck on the belts, should be fun!

Yah B.C. You also should make the pictures bigger so more people see the vents in the hood, they are sick

Mikestokman
12-13-2013, 12:32 PM
Haha I would if I knew how... I tried importing them from photobucket and I think that's why I had to break it up into 4 posts :/ I'm contemplating doing the vents in the m3 aswell but I dunno how it would look with the red paint...

So since my steering rack is blown, and we just got a clean 325i at picknpull, i got a new steering rack and tie rods.

487207

and i installed my rack spacers to see how much i would need to shim out my wheel. This is with contours (17x7.5+41)

487208 487209

and this is with rack spacers and motorsport wheels (17x7.5+21 with wheel spacer)

And last but not least I freshened up my hydro ebrake and put in some stainless bushings so it wont be sloppy on track and break like last year.

Painted the nose piece, reworked my fan bracket, steering rack and everything has been swapped over.

next up was my messed up hood latches, pins are cheap and easy, so I did that.

And this is how it sits right now with skirts installed. cage will be welded in pretty soon, and Im having shifter issues so ive got to mess around with shift linkage at some point.

They are old school riken mesh wheels off like an old trans am. 16x9.5+38 and I had to run an 8 mm spacer up front to clear the strut

My friend bought a tube bender to do his tube front/crash bar for his proam car, so we spend a day building a 4 point cage for my car. free things are cool. going to add on the front half this winter more then likely, but this was quick and easy and cost me like 200~ in dom.

Got 5x120-5x114.3 adapters for the front so I can run all my stock m wheels in the rear and buy decent size/offset wheels for cheap when I do an angle mod (more then the rack spacers, probably slr..)

And thats up to date. just competed in the first comp day of the year and didnt qualify.. only took top 8 qualifiers and based on the general consensus in the pits i should have been right up there. had 2 solid qualifying runs but not enough to make the cut. not a big deal, huge improvement over last year and i could not be any happier.

I think next on the mod list is poly rear bushings everywhere, but we'll see.
till then,

damn, them door cards! are they aluminum? would you consider making some to sell? my leather cards are #$%^.

also, digging that cage!

Only one side is like that the other is still the floppy oem one so passengers have something to hold on to. Yeah it's aluminum and wood for the speaker hole spacer (lol) so far too ghetto to consider selling haha. More so made it because you can get a v.i. For not having door cards and ain't nobody got time for that! If you seriously wanted some just go to any sheet metal shop with like a cardboard template of what you're after and it would be cheap and easy for them to cut out. Took me 15 minutes at work to do the outside shape. I just riveted it straight to the door frame with some foam tape in between, doesn't rattle at all (seriously, nothing)

honestly, i was really digging the fact you kept the speaker. ive never seen that on an e36. i may have to do that idea of cardboard.

Mikestokman
05-31-2014, 01:54 AM
Speaker was easy too! Just made another template for that, cut it out of a sheet of like 1" plywood I think and ran 4 bolts with a nylock nut through everything. Then you just need to make another hole in the aluminum so the magnet can sit through it. Doesn't hit the door if you keep it in the stock location. I'm pretty sure I used 0.04" aluminum sheet metal for the skin and if you go to most sheet metal shops they will most likely have some scratched stuff that you could get for cheap/ free.

Poly mounts that came in the car were ,so i made some at work based off the vorshlag design. also found out that the front subframe had the reinforcement tabs welded in already. bonus.

Oem tranny mounts were split too, so i made nylon ones of those too.

And finally an e46 came into the scrap yard so i got some lca's. i modified a set of ground control camber plates for a friends e90 335i track car so he gave me his old ast top hats which i should be able to modify to work on my e36..
also ordered some delrin so i can make the lca lollipop bushing since I have seen how simple the ones that slr sells look to make.

And lastly, some pics from the last event. next event is on sunday so ill get to see if the stiff motor/trans mounts feel much better.

So a little while ago I kindof jokingly suggested that someone send me some ebay angle kit specs. Kevin (tairyhesticles) shot me a message and some measurements and it kinda got the ball rolling. Originally I was just going to make an exact ebay replica, but then after looking at some pics of seans kit, i figured i could machine most of the parts myself at work, so I sent him a message seeing if i could just buy the block itself and make everything else and started building my stuff, by the time sean got a bit of free time to reply, i had already decided to just give it a shot at making everything myself so heres my attempt. (PLEASE NOTE:I never plan on selling these, basically just a one off pair to save myself some money/get creative with my build. i fully respect the time and r&d that goes into the slr kit.)

Im pretty pumped on how its turning out so far. not entirely sure how my ackerman measurement i did is going to work out so if it doesnt self steer at all, ill probably slot the hole and make an offset washer like what it looks like the slr one does. all thats left is threading the bolts for the knuckle and then making the angle spacer look a bit nicer.

Thanks! It's getting to the point where I'm happy with it. Probably install the arms and stuff next weekend when I can allign it, then it should be done for the rest of the drift season, then in the winter I'll tear the subframe out, mod the trailing arm bushing mount thing (mike_e36 style) and make new bushings for everything. Undecided if I should go delrin or solid aluminum for bushings but when the time comes ill research it more.

Can you explain this a little more? Like what exactly did you do and why?

Mikestokman
07-28-2014, 01:53 PM
Mikee36 also explains it a bit on page 56 of his build thread, but basically, the stock bracket is dimpled on both sides to center the bushing. When you play with your rear camber settings it adjusts your toe way in or out and the stock slotted holes aren't enough to get it remotely close to where it needs to be. So we cut out one side of the dimple, weld in a flat plate, and then use shims to offset the bushing in or out to where it needs to be.

And the bushings are just something I made at work because my stock ones were split, power flex ones are pretty cheap iirc.

Looks good man, I love how much the guys in the drift scene do things themselves. Your angle plates look good, but mounted the way they are you are actually increasing ackerman, I'm pretty sure you want less. As I understand it, too much ackerman causes the front tires to fight each other in a drift. Maybe one of the guys with more experience in this area could chime in?
Cheers either way

Mounted the same way as an slr kit is so it has less Ackerman then stock. From my understanding, the tie rod and ball joint usually line up with the center of the rear end, the closer you bring that line to the rear wheel, the less Ackerman you have, making the outer wheel turn faster. I could be wrong but I was getting some helpful hints from someone who has modded plenty of 240 knuckles and they seem to work really well for the small bit I've played around with it on the street.

First day i got to really thrash on the angle kit was at our second annual matsuri event. 2 days of continuous tandem trains and killing a large portion of our tire stockpiles. everything worked flawlessly.

Managed to be the only car to come out completely unscathed after that event, did the final comp day of the year, learned to drift banks/ follow people on bank runs, and now its tome to rebuild and make it slightly better for next year.

So far the plans are fairly minimal, pull the rear subframe out and replace all the rubber bushings with aluminum, and pull the motor and seal up the few oil leaks and replace the vanos seal, make new shifter bushings, replace the guibo, just minor shit that i dont want to have to deal with next summer.

i get this "sweet" garage to work in all winter, not much but atleast its not covered in snow.

Started off the winter by tearing out the rear end to do all the bushings i wanted to do during the summer, but just didnt have the down time to do so. Since I had to pull off the exhaust to get the subframe out I figured i might aswell chop out the cats and resonator and replace it with straight pipe.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/1374325_10204451685026426_6202160423365162040_n_zp s2dd7ac20.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/1374325_10204451685026426_6202160423365162040_n_zp s2dd7ac20.jpg.html)

Then i moved on to sand blasting and painting every arm and wire wheeling every bolt that came out of the rear end of the car. painted everything up and made some solid bushings. threw the bushings in a freezer for a couple hours, then pressed them in. not going anywhere any time soon..

One of my aluminum camber arms for the rear seized at some point in between my first and second allignment last year so all i have left to do is re make the threaded shaft and then I can re-assemble the rear end and start working on pulling the motor and tranny, making all new shifter bushings, replacing my vanos seal and sealing up a few oil leaks. then paint the bay and put it all back together again.

Looking like a super solid car. Like you have replaced so many bushings with solid bushings, that you probably have way fewer parts on the car that can go wrong, what I want to do on my car.

Please don't paint the bay just black

Thats the idea with making everything solid. I've had too many of the stock rubber ones fail on me at the track or on the street that i figured if I can lose a bit of comfort and gain more reliability then it's worth it. I still daily drive the car in the summer and honestly after about 1/2 an hour of driving I don't even notice the vibrations anymore.

As as for the engine bay I'm thinking of going with a dark gloss grey. We painted my friends engine bay with that and it turned out great.

Any pointers for drifting a 318? I have a 93 318is that I got for dirt cheap because I missed my old e36 and I wanted something to learn to drift in.

I now see the 1.8 is gutless as hell but I see people drifting it haha. Suggestions?

Whats are some good cheap/easy diy mods that I should start with?

Keep up the good work!

PS represent BC ;) haha the 1.8 is pretty useless, but weld the diff, make a decent hydro ebrake, pump your tires up to like 60 and just go have fun. An m50 isn't too expensive. I couldn't link the track at all in my 318 and would spin almost every time, but at the minimum it should teach you a bit of car control so when you do hop into a more powerful car you'll have a better understanding of what to do to hold a line. If you ever have any other technical questions or whatever feel free to pm me!

I'm running the same front suspension set up and it feels awesome.. although I still need a real alignment haha.

When deleting the cats, did you feel a torque lose? I had to take off my muffler a couple weeks ago and I drove it down the road to see how it sounded and I felt like it had a little bit less high end power than usual, but I would really like to delete the cats.

Haven't driven the car at all in months, so I couldn't tell ya. But there's enough people running actual straight pipes without mufflers that I doubt it makes a big difference. If you ran open header that would mean that your O2 sensor was doing nothing so it was probably running on the rich side which would loose power.

So pretty much the only thing I really broke in the rear end last year was my camber arm, I guess the previous owner who installed them didn't believe in neversieze. Oops....

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/F7A0EBBF-CA5F-4319-8700-05FD6967A1D5_zps5u4qmbja.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/F7A0EBBF-CA5F-4319-8700-05FD6967A1D5_zps5u4qmbja.jpg.html)
So I made a new arm out of stainless, cleaned up the remaining threads in the end, and put it back together with a bunch of neversieze.

Also got got the rear end all back together. Putting clean parts back together is so much nicer.

I'm really bad at build threads haha...

So, last year pretty much since the first time I drove the car in February, the shift linkage was sloppy and even locked me out of 4th at one point. Since Im on the theme of fixing shit, that got added to the list.

Started off by bucking off the rubber filled shift knob arm or whatever you want to call it and welding on a a solid steel one. Thought about threading it, but theres literally no point because the shift knob attaches with set screws anyways..

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/7EF6A9B3-2ABE-48B8-9D20-A59C471AF789_zps10gue3ua.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/7EF6A9B3-2ABE-48B8-9D20-A59C471AF789_zps10gue3ua.jpg.html)

Then i pressed out the nylon bushing in the bottom and pressed in stainless steel ones. I have stainless bushings in my winter car and they're great.

But making just that solid wouldn't solve my problem. Google told me that people buy uuc dssr's to fix sloppy shifter issues, but that money could be better spent on tires this summer, so I made a similar version. It's not as fancy looking but I didn't really want to spend a ton of time making it because now I'm focusing on refreshing the motor. Should work just as good and that's all that matters.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/0A708B79-88B8-4C04-B64B-059F6444B8C0_zpsofmhar3i.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/0A708B79-88B8-4C04-B64B-059F6444B8C0_zpsofmhar3i.jpg.html)

bolted everything up to my spare transmission and it all fits really well. Will bolt it up to the real tranny when I pull everything out this weekend.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/51114EA9-89C3-4D83-981A-0D0C9F9F9F11_zpsmnsxlob4.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/51114EA9-89C3-4D83-981A-0D0C9F9F9F11_zpsmnsxlob4.jpg.html)

thats all for now, like I said, hoping to pull the motor/tranny this weekend then I can paint the bay, freshen up everything on the motor, and redo my vanos seal as I'm pretty sure it leaks internally..

Homemade. Eg civic clutch master cylinder, handle I built at work, and a bracket I made that bolts on to the tunnel rather then being welded on. Just runs in line to the rear brakes.

So, pulled the motor out last week, cleaned everything and bought some rattle cans. Chose a glossy grey because I think it will contrast well with the mostly black motor.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/7AFEC8C2-8EC6-499C-80ED-64DBEF34DEF2_zpsw0hfgvhu.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/7AFEC8C2-8EC6-499C-80ED-64DBEF34DEF2_zpsw0hfgvhu.jpg.html)

then took the motor to my friends garage to tear it apart and simplify coolant lines. Found out both my knock sensors are destroyed and that probably explains a few running issues I had before I parked the car. (Speedhunters street car of the year 2010 in the background )

so probably going to make a big rockauto order for gaskets then buy a fx clutch/flywheel because dual mass ones seem really dumb for drifting.

Cutch is ordered, took an entire bottle of superclean and 3 cans of brakeclean with a wire brush to everything on the motor. Pulled off the pan and valve cover, cleaned and resealed. Also pulled out all the exhaust studs, wire wheeled them, then put em back in the head. Just need to make a list of things to order and it's ready to go back together!

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/10CBB0EB-8A83-4A30-A807-B6FAC38315DC_zps9enudpqf.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/10CBB0EB-8A83-4A30-A807-B6FAC38315DC_zps9enudpqf.jpg.html)

next thing I want to do is figure out where to run my oil temp and pressure senders. I'm thinking tapped vanos banjo bolt with a braided line to a remote bracket for the pressure sender, and tap either the block or the oil filter housing somewhere where the temp sender will be in constant flow for a more accurate reading.

Bolted up the "dssr" and linkage up to my trans, and it feels so good! 100% less sloppy then oem. Goes into all the gears very nice. cant wait to really road test it!

then ordered a bunch of gaskets and shit so now i can start reassembling it. Im happy with how its looking and working on clean things is so much nicer. well worth the hours and hours ive spent with a wire brush. up to 2 bottles of superclean and 6-7 cans of brake cleen...

So in my last post i mentioned oil pressure and temp gauges, well, here we go. i didnt want to spend a ton of money on and oil cap or a bunch of time making a adapter plate to relocate the factory idiot pressure light, so after some not so careful consideration and seeing a couple products come up in other threads, we decided to tap the housing for a temp gauge and then weld a -3 an line on it so i can remote mount the sender like i wanted. i think it should work well!

They're pretty ghetto but i needed something that wouldn't hit my seat. It's just a sheet of 0.06 aluminum riveted on the door with a handle and speaker box, because I still daily it haha.

DUDE....How is the lock kit? hard to tell from the pics but looks like a massive reduction in Ackerman, like almost 0, looks like a little less than the SLR kit...hows it feel? self steer and all that jazz?

Mikestokman
03-04-2015, 07:52 PM
Angles kit feels/works great for just drilling a pretty much random hole in a piece of metal. Still self steers and everything like a normal car would, except now I can huck the car into a corner hard and not run out of angle. I drove with a friend who has a part shop Max kit in his s13 and he said it easily has as much angle as his car. Slr kit definatly has more adjustment and is way more fine tuned then the one I made, but for costing me 68$, this works pretty damn well.

03-04-2015, 10:06 PM
It's the "stage 4" off gripforce.com if I could order again I would get the stage 3 just to have a sprung clutch, but this will work. Took exactly a week to ship into Canada

jjjjjjj
03-05-2015, 01:38 PM
Nice clutch especially for the money! I have the stage 3 on my daily driven turbo e36. It's tough enough I really couldn't imagine the stage 4 being much more difficult. Just made a clutch stop and all is good with the uuc suggested atf fluid mix

Mikestokman
03-06-2015, 03:06 AM
Yeah ideally I wanted the sprung disk but I didn't read good enough when I ordered. Oh well. In the end I am building a racecar, not a comfortable daily driver, so I feel like as long as it benefits me on track, I will be able to live with the consequences of daily driving it. If it's really tough to drive it will just be motivation to get my Subaru build done quicker aswell haha.

Awesome thread man, I actually just installed that exact clutch/flywheel on my car lol. Was surprised that it doesn't sound really bad at idle like rumors say about most single mass flywheels out there. Barely 40 miles into the break in process. Not as harsh as I thought it was going to be. Almost disappointing to be honest. But I hope it will grab and last a while!

Hell yeah man. I love this thread.. Quick question about the runnin the hydro lines.. Did you have the flare the ends before putting the fittings on and tee-ing them?

Mikestokman
08-31-2015, 02:27 PM
Yeah I just bought a cheap flaring kit and practiced until I could be sure they wouldn't leak. You can buy pre flared lines from auto parts stores, but either way you'll have to flare the oem lines in the car to attach them to the hydro

zparkere30

can i get your front wheel specs please? i'm having an insane amount of trouble with wheel clearance on my build after lengthening my control arms, though i might be rocking too much front wheel/tire (235/40/17 9.5 et -13)

Mikestokman
10-01-2015, 12:05 PM
I've been doing machinist things since I was like 12 years old so it all just comes with practice haha. Front wheels are 17x7+20 with 215/40/17 tires on it. They touch the lca slightly at lock but not enough to grab/notice. Will be changing front wheels to a pair of advans next year that are 17x8+13, so everything should be pretty much the same. Lca is stock e46 arm with a spherical bushing pressed in the end for my angle kit

jalopi
10-01-2015, 10:23 PM
weird, for some reason they looked wider than that to me

after lengthening my control arms i don't have issues rubbing the frame rails any more, but holy crap do i rub the front of the wheel well. thinking i'm gonna have to completely remove it. ever seen anyone do this in person? the only thing i can find online is chelsea's car

then we partied for the last dday of the year. It was a comp day, I qualified second and my teammate with the r32 got 8th, but we didn't really give a shit about that, we just wanted to tandem.

Super simple to make, just cut 3 lines with an angle grinder and bend it down. Mine opens right behind the rad to draw out hot air, and I just had to notch part of the bent part to clear the rad cap

Mikestokman
10-26-2015, 02:45 AM
Thanks! No issues with axles so far, or the diff for that matter. Stock m3 axles and stock 3.15 lsd, still locks good. Only rear end related things I've broken were 3 axle bolts stripped last winter and got replaced with Allen head bolts, and before the last event I snapped the front diff bolt so now I run a 1/2" bolt all the way through the bushing and housing and a nut on the other side.

pretty sweet build, I like how you built everything yourself ! ... do you still have the trans am wheels you were rocking on the 318 ? if so, why aren't you using them, or sell them to me ! haha ... I liked how the red and black two tone looked , teal is nice too I guess ...

one other thing I noticed (maybe it was just a bad picture angle) but it seems like the roll cage is pretty far from the roof, and it looked like the headliner was still installed ?
I am wondering why you didn't strip the interior and try to make the cage fit tighter against the chassis and tie it in ?

also wondering why not strip the interior to save some weight ? I junked an e36 and the carpet is so thick and heavy, with so much sound deadening, you can shave LOTS of weight and would probably make the car feel much better ...

keep the updates coming, maybe one day I'll have my car ready and bring it out to BC !

Haha thanks. Trans am wheels wouldn't clear the m3 brakes so I sold them. I liked the red too but it was time for a change and I like the blue aswell (not teal ;) )

headliner is is still in the car because I still street it and aesthetically it is more appealing. Cage fits super tight to b pillars and roof so I'm guessing you saw a bad angle.

Same story with the carpet. 50% of people I talk to that strip their cars regret it, plus that little bit of weight savings isn't worth it to me. Sure it's heavy but the comfort aspect is worth it. If I don't notice a difference in drifting by myself vs with a passenger under 250lbs, then I'm not going to notice a difference on the weight saved by taking the carpet out.

that is a very valid point ... I will keep that in mind when time comes with mine, if the carpet still fits I'll put it in.

what lug nuts were you using to bolt up the trans am wheels ? I have some 15x8 1980 - 1981 trans am turbo wheels for my beater but the lug hole is not tapered or ball type, it's just a big square ... or had you machined something yourself to make em fit ?

Urghh !! ... mine are the square type, I don't know what I'll be able to do to run them ... 5x120 vs 5.120.7 ... lots of debate over this on the internet ...

jalopi
11-05-2015, 06:45 PM
it's really more like 5x120 vs 5x4.75 (4.75 inch = almost 120.7mm)

the difference is really negligible. there's a small army of keyboard physicists/engineers that say otherwise, but that hasn't stopped people from successfully using corvette wheels on e36s for years now. i've personally been rocking 5x4.75 wheels for about 3 years now, the tapers on the wheels still look fine

i think toyota lug nuts have the same thread pitch as BMWs, so you'd need to convert to the right length stud and get a set of toyota lug nuts to rock those wheels

also, that wheel is dope as shit, what kind is it?

Haven't updated in a while.. Had to move so threw the car back together and didn't get around to installing the shifter yet. Figure I'll drive it as is for the event at the end of this month then change it out. I forgot how awful the stock one is compared to my subaru... Did manage to get the oil cooler all done though, looks neat, temps are down while driving and doesn't appear to leak anymore (had a weld with a pinhole, all fixed now). Still need to install a little shroud for it off the bumper and a fan on the backside for cooling if/when needed. But it's ready enough for the first day of the season!

So the first event went super good, sweet tandems, getting all over people's doors all day. temps stayed super low with the new cooler and nothing leaked so I'd say big success.

I've been a big advocate for keeping cars simple, keeping the hobby cheap, and driving with close to stock power until your driving skill outweighs the power of the car, and based on the last event I feel like I'm getting to that point now, so I picked up this:

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/ED3B9A3E-B328-44E7-95E1-B09530297AE5_zpspdqtruhp.png (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/ED3B9A3E-B328-44E7-95E1-B09530297AE5_zpspdqtruhp.png.html)

2003 Chevy lm7 out of a 1/2 ton Yukon. Gonna slowly refresh it, make all the accessory brackets myself, make my own motor/trans mounts, and basically buy the least amount of stuff nessacary to make it run. Not 100% sure of what trans I want to run, but I saw that abc clutch makes a ls-BMW trans adapter, and I have 2 zf trans and access to high tech CNC equipment, so I feel like that might be the route I go. If it doesn't work then I'll barely be out any money, and in the mean time it saves me from having to buy a completely new trans setup and clutch/flywheel shit and parts like that. Should be fun and I love the fact that gm shit is almost always in stock at parts stores so I don't have to worry about bringing every spare when I travel to events.

Solid drifting philosophy! Too many people get lost in the build aiming for ridiculous horsepower numbers and building their cars to formula drift spec, but don't get any seat time while their car sits in the garage. While that's all well and good if you're already a pro, it just makes the car more difficult to learn on, and teaches some bad habits. For instance, I know a guy who's first mod was a hydro, and he literally cannot initiate without it... anyhow... good luck with the zf adapter, I'm anxious to see how this turns out!

P.S. Inb4 Jalopi asks whether you plan on running accusump on your LSx swapped bmw lol

Funny you should say that, I have a friend who has been building an 800hp 2jz s13 with a dogbox, his own version of wisefab knuckles/control arms, rear rad, tube frame, pretty much anything you'd find on a pro car, and he has driven a total of 1.5 laps in 3 years. Meanwhile I've driven all but 2 events in my car, gotten to be a way better driver then I honestly thought would be possible, and have had a ton of fun along the way.

As for accusump, I've been reading just about everyone's build threads, and have a couple friends who have lsx drift cars and most people either have a baffle installed in their pan, or run an accusump. If I can find a used accusump I'll definitely run one, if not I'll look into a cheaper baffle option for the time being. I'd hate to wipe out a motor due to oiling, but if I do the motor only cost $300 so it's not the end of the world.

I went with the trap door baffle from Holley. I only have one event on the car, and some hard canyon driving and my oil pressure has never dropped. If you were building a pro-am + level car I'd say do an accusump, but the trap door has been working great for me so far.

that right there is good advice

for example, i saw a video from hyperfest rapper dan posted on his wall the other day. for those who don't know the name, he used to drive for sikky until they pulled out of FD. anyway, he's got a stock KA'd s13 with some insane rear gear (4.9 i think he said?) and he was running with a 300hp 1jz s14 and a monstrous 800-900hp ls something s14. the other cars did make more smoke and were faster on straighter sections, but it didn't look like they were dusting him too bad

i guess what i'm getting at is the 260hp those 5.3's put down might not impress people as much as a 800hp 2j, but the more i see the more i'm convinced that as long as you have good torque there's no need for insane power figures

even so, apparently even a mild cam really wakes those 5.3s up and puts em into the mid 300s :D

Mikestokman
05-23-2016, 06:38 PM
Factory this one makes 285hp (probably at the crank) and I'm sure I can do some minor bolt ons and a hp tuners tune and it will be 300+ and that's all I'm shooting for. I want to make Murcia noises, and maybe a bit more smoke without breaking the bank year after year on tires, plus when the motor breaks parts are more readily available, which is sweet.

As for what you were saying, at the last event I was keeping up with 450hp 13b rx7's, and a crate ls1 s13 with no issues. I had to jump the start line a bit to keep up with them on the straight, but after initiation I could stay pretty much on their door for the rest of the run. As long as they kept a consistent speed it was pretty easy, where they would loose me is when they fuck up and toss it in with too much angle, slow down, then get back on it and pull a gap on me I couldn't catch back up. But like theres not much I can do about that with a stock s50...

Cams make a huge difference. I was reading cam shootouts yesterday and there's a comp that made +109hp on a stock ls1 on the engine dyno. Cam/Valvetrain upgrade, good headers, LS6 intake, and a good tune and you'll likely be more then happy with it.

Maybe down the road I'll do a cam and stuff but for now I'm sure it will be fun in stock form, for now...

aren't the stock rod bolts one of the weak links on those truck engines too? i hear they like to let go if you're keen on banging the rev limiter for too long

they're not the very best.
there's much debate about dropping in a set of ARPs without resizing the big end. most i've seen/read say to just throw them in for peace of mind. but there are always the 'do it right' guys who freak out and say that the higher clamping force of the better bolts deform the big end. (of rods with likely 100k miles on them using the same, stock bearings like it really matters.)
the ARPs cost ~$125. a new 5.3 longblock is $300-800 depending on what you get and a short block is even cheaper. and those are junkyard prices. a lot of small displacement LS truck motors go for less than that from person to person.

really, it depends on each person.

and if OP plans to use the stock cam or an LS6 cam, i don't think the motor will stay high enough in the rpm range to overstress the factory rod bolts.

So over the long weekend our local track hosted the drift Union invitational, which is one of the biggest events in western Canada, my weekend started off rough by popping out a frost plug from my oil cooler block 3 laps into the day, so I swapped the stock filter housing back on and got back out there, really just happy I didn't loose the motor when all the oil poured out of it. After that everything went really smooth. It wasn't super hot out and the car cooled perfectly which was nice considering that's the killer of most cars at that event. The big media dumps haven't dropped yet, but here's a couple pics and the aftermovie.

Then I got a lot too close to the wall twice and did a typical e36 thing and bent the shit out of everything in the rear end, kept driving after that and then a 240 broke a tie Rod in front of me and I was already on his door so I bent the front over aswell. Oh well, such is the life of a drift car. Rough weekend for all the team cars cosmetically

Wiring harness from the truck is thinned out and minus the few fuses and relays, it's done until I can put it in the car and mount the obd port and shit like that, http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/3687EE75-E46A-4BEE-BE49-02C9E9B936E1_zpsiszscoya.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/3687EE75-E46A-4BEE-BE49-02C9E9B936E1_zpsiszscoya.jpg.html)

So then on to the next thing, trans adapter plate template. Bolted up, needs to be 1-1/4 thick instead of the 3/4 it is now but that won't change anything when I burn it on the plasma table at work. http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/0DE2EA72-D382-444C-9B3A-F5BE488FD3A9_zpsumr7ymsc.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/0DE2EA72-D382-444C-9B3A-F5BE488FD3A9_zpsumr7ymsc.jpg.html)

After that was bolted up I had an idea of how low to the ground it will be , so I looked at some oil pan specs and cut mine to be the same as an f-body pan. Well there's lots of options like old school t5/10 or cd009, and there's a company in the uk (abc clutch) that makes the adapter/flywheel for the 6 speed trans they have over there but it's like $2500+ and I'm poor so that's not an option for me haha

Completely agreed. The zf 5 speed is just as capable of holding power as a T56, and it shifts better in my opinion. Mating it to an LS just makes sense.

So now I'm currently machining the fuel rails, finishing welding the oil pan, then shortening the pickup, aligning all the accessories, then I'll move on to making the adapter plate out of steel, should be rough cut out just after New Years. Would you mind elaborating a little bit on how you made your adapter, and what process you used to get everything centered from both sides? Also, what is the reason it needs to be 1 1/4"? So the bolts from the trans side have a bit more thread to grab onto?

Mikestokman
12-22-2016, 09:57 AM
It was just simple layout stuff, measure from the center of the crank to the bellhousing bolt circle, do the same with the trans, then overlay the centres and mark all the holes. I made a little dummy shaft when I bolted it together for this picture that was the od of the crank and the Id of the input shaft and it lines up beautiful. Needs to be thicker for the ring gear of the flex plate to contact the starter without hitting the adapter plate then I'll build a button flywheel off that or just machine a crank adapter and run a BMW flywheel so I don't have to do quite as much machining

Made fuel rails, FAST fuel rail extrusion, machined it at work, made all the accessories line up, now just have to get the pan back from welding and mod the pickup then it's all ready to go. Probably start the adapter plate next week and then I can toss it in the shell I'll be picking up this weekend

That will be the shell that the v8 goes in. 318is auto with clean title and no rust for $150, not too bad.

To answer your questions, speedmaster qualifier intake, painted with some vht engine paint. Not doing a cam right now because I just want to get it driving with no issues as a stock(ish) motor. After its running and drives well, I will put a cam/ springs in it, but for now id just rather put that $1200 somewhere else. if it runs this year, it will just be a street car, so it doesn't need to make a ton of power, just sound cool and do sick burnouts.

So now I guess I'm competing with jalopi for ghetto headers.

But there's a method to my madness. I think that by Doing both like this, (and obviously cutting the pipe shorter) and putting a flange, I'll be able to build dump tubes that clear the steering shaft and the starter with no issues. Atleast that's the theory. We'll find out for sure when I first test fit it.

Oil pan is done! Made a copy of the improved racing cooler manifold and tossed some old -10 lines on. Will be doing a bulkhead at the front of the motor and then running short lines to the cooler, just to make for ease of install/removal.

Adapter plate is being burned tomorrow, probably start machining it this weekend depending what's in the machine at the end of Friday.

And set the motor in to see if things will work. So, unfortunately my ghetto headers won't work, they hit the steering shaft on the 4th runner and the only remedy is to mount it super high (can fit a 2x4 between pan and crossmember) and if I do that then I'd have to cut the hood to clear the throttle. Sounds gay so I'll do something else and make my own headers. Other then that, tons of room for activities! Even with truck accessories I still have plenty of room between the rad and the pulleys so that's atleast 1 win for today.

Right now it's 1-1/4" thick, just because I can always take material off but it's way harder to put it back on. It will end up being milled as much as possible so it's not so bulky when I get closer to an end product. 2 holes at the bottom are for ls oil pan, th400 is built for a small block Chevy so they only have the top half of the bellhousing holes

Nope no chatter at all, where the tips of the clamps are is thick so there's lots of pressure on the part. As for location, the whole program is written from the center of the crank, which is kindof a pain to find with how I had the plate burned, but isn't impossible haha

That adapter plate setup looks excellent!

Regarding your intake, have you taken any measurements to see how much too tall a shaved truck intake would be to fit under a factory hood? What all parts off the truck intake were you able to re-use with that intake like throttle body, etc. (assuming you had the truck intake from the engine, maybe you didn't...)?

Mikestokman
01-30-2017, 12:18 AM
Truck intake is way too tall, if you look back on page 6, there's a pic of it when I had the truck intake on and a pic of after I got my car one, the throttle body sits way higher, and as is with the car manifold I think there will be minimal clearance with the hood. I made my own fuel rails so I could use the truck injectors without needing injector spacers, re used the map sensor, and the throttle body is off a truck ( not my motor though, it came with drive by wire so had to get one off a '99).

tptrsn
02-08-2017, 10:03 AM
Well, the reason I say I don't know that my vague picture in my head would have worked is that it involved a flex plate with the starter ring gear on it, and then a separate pressure plate that could be spaced out from the flex plate by a nice small diameter hub adapter. BUUUUUT, I gather now that the pressure plate style you're using doesn't involve a flex plate at all.

The only benefit to what I was seeing in my head is reduced inertia. Other than that, the way you are making it is probably better in every way (especially in that it will probably actually work, where my idea probably wouldn't. :D).

Mikestokman
02-08-2017, 11:10 AM
I'll be using the stock flex plate, so you're not far off. I'm not sure if I'm going to sandwich it between the flywheel and the crank, or bolt it to the flywheel and space it back to the stock location, I'll decide that once I see how much meat I can take off the flywheel

i have the lightweight flywheel and it's ~18lbs. But the pplate is crazy heavy. I bet the ctsv dmf is every bit of 45 or 50 lbs. heavy flywheels make cars so much easier to drive. And it's a bigger engine in a much bigger car. Makes sense to me.

Good read and food for thought for sure, however I'm not super worried about daily driveablity, and my thought process behind the weight of what I'm building is that if I make the flywheel around the same weight as my current f1 flywheel (14 lbs) and use the same pressure plate and flywheel (f1 stage 4 unsprung 6 puck with hd pressure plate) then the pedal and driveablity should be the same as the m3, just with a motor that makes more power and torque. Truck depth, stock truck balancer, truck water pump, truck alternator, and a stock e36 p/s pump. Just made my own brackets and spacers to make it all sit right

That's one of the coolest setups then, in that it definitely helps keep the costs down. Nice work!!

Is that truck alternator one of the self-exciting ones that are easy to deal with, or don't you even care because you're using a truck ECU or something?

Truck ecu, will be tuning with hp tuners because easy, whole harness is basically wired exactly like stock, just turned it around so the ecu can sit under the dash instead of in the engine bay

Few more engine bay pics, got bored so I slapped together a front end. Starting on chassis wiring tomorrow, cutting out almost all the factory harness, going to leave lights, signals, and windows, because street car.

That looks GREAT! Are you surprised by how roomy and easy to work on it feels in there around the engine, or isn't it as good to work on as it looks like it would be?

Mikestokman
04-13-2017, 09:10 AM
Thanks! Yeah, I didn't think it would be as roomy as it is, but now that it's in there it looks like it will be way easier to get to everything then it would be on a stock 6cyl car. The only thing that's going to be a pain is the rear header bolt on the drivers side, mainly because it's tucked right behind the booster, but even then I think I'll be able to get it from under the car.

With my CXR mounts and headers, all of the header bolts are easy to get to. And my engine is placed in basically the same spot.

Had to make custom bolts to thread into the crank since Chevy decided to use m11x1.5 pitch bolts and they're impossible to find. But it's done now. Finally. Now gotta pull the motor, paint the bay, install everything and start on wiring.

I don't know if there'd be any way to fit the intake without pushing the rad foreword more without pie cuts haha, looking at other people's pictures and standing there with my 4" mandrel bent 90 had me scratching my head for a while..

And thanks! I'm super happy with it and stoked to get the car running that much more. Go back a page or two for reference of what that chunk of steel started out as haha

awesome update!

did you get a final weight on the flywheel and clutch assembly?
i don't recall. did you have a local machine shop balance the flywheel? makes me want to have mine lightened when it's out next. (hopefully never)

I haven't got a weight yet but will later today, I was going to have it balanced, but since everything has been done on a cnc and is symmetrical I think I'm just going to run it, I'm tired of having to wait on other people for parts to make this run, and since it would be getting balanced by my dads friend "when he has some free time" sorta deal that could take a while.

Only issue I can see (or maybe issue, I dunno) is that when installing the slave, it touches the pivot arm inside and has about an inch to push in before it's seated on the trans. Only reason I call it an issue is because I can't remember how much I had to push in the one in my m3 before it seated. By looking at the piston on the slave itself, it looks like there was only an inch of travel to begin with, but I'll probably pull the one off my m3 just to double check. And if it's not quite enough preload on the slave I'll just shim the throw out bearing slightly to make it perfect.

Hmmmmm.... Clearly you need an automatic trans! :buttrock :rofl2

So the flywheel ended up being 17.6 lbs, kinda disappointed as my goal was 14 ish, but it's still not terrible and I could make it lighter if I really wanted but that would mean sacrificing some of the thickness underneath the friction surface and then I think I'd run the risk of warping it under abuse (maybe I'm just paranoid, I don't really know how hot a clutch gets). Bay is all painted now and I can start reassembly this week, going to make a shim for the slave afterall, just to be on the safe side as the one I took off in a junkyard had about 1/8" more preload then mine and it's easy to do now rather then pull it later when it doesn't work in the car.

It's not like the V8 revs like a honda motor anyway. I am going to assume most of the mass of the flywheel's extra weight is close to the axis of rotation. In which case, the weight won't make much of a difference.

Maybe your v8 doesn't rev like a Honda....

Yeah i thought of that aswell which is why I'm not going to worry about changing it, just going to run it as is and if it's not that sweet I can always take more off next time it's out of the car. No big deal. Dropped my ecu off at a friends shop to get them to unlock it with hp tuners and load a base tune so I can at least fire it when the time comes. I think all I really need to buy to make it run is oil and a fuel pressure regulator off a vette and then hook up a few wires and relays and bang bang.

Mikestokman
05-16-2017, 12:23 AM
Turns out I'm fully dumb, had the throw out bearing in 90* off, so once I put it in the right way the slave preload is now perfect. Idiot...

Also getting a pair of top hats waterjetted out at my work so I can have all the camber/caster adjustment I could ever want/ need when I build my new angle kit and control arms. Starting to get excited about this thing, but keep reality-checking myself with a massive list of all the shit left to do. But it's ok, having no timeframe on when I need this thing running makes me a little bit less stressed

I have no automotive sympathy, the car will be driven exactly as hard as I drive the other car. I just want to do this one right from the start since I put so much effort into the parts on it haha. Still gonna send it, and I'm sure it will end up looking as fcked as my m3 as the years go on... but that's ok because by then I'm sure I'll find an e46 coupe to toss the motor into.

Mikestokman

Nope, when I swap everything into an e46 it will be a whole new ballgame, but if all I have to make is a motor and trans mount, that's the easiest part of this whole deal

Knocked out a bunch of little shit this weekend and just basically got a lot of things fully mounted that weren't mounted before I painted the bay. Ordered a fuel pressure regulator, so now once I add the relays to the wiring harness it should be able to run. Finished up the shifter mount and will probably fab up the linkage this week, I'm happy with how it turned out for the most part and the throw is short enough that I won't be punching my dash which is always a plus...

Pulled the rear subframe out on Thursday after work, made new solid subframe risers, diff bushings, and the rtab bearings, and installed everything tonight with shorter springs and an eyeball alignment. The Rtab's are sick and I'm so stoked to try them out, installed a grease nipple so I can pump em up if they ever make noise, but they should work great. http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y534/mikestokman/05F84BC9-4970-4DC9-BEC6-360B3EE31DC8_zpsb3gjf97g.png (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/mikestokman/media/05F84BC9-4970-4DC9-BEC6-360B3EE31DC8_zpsb3gjf97g.png.html)
