So, I have a friend that is selling an m5 cluster. It's a grey faced one. I'd use it myself, but I've got one already. It's a super cool look.
Here's some pics

Pasoft to code your vin to it. Then dis 4.4 to code your zcs code.
The tach lights won't work though.

The tach lights go out as oil temp goes up, so No, neither one will work.
Nick, if you have the S62 with 69K for sale that would be swell.

Lol. That car is in Europe somewhere :)
If you ever get around to tellin me where to find those Daten files, I'll get working on making this thing work on a 7.2 dme....

that will code your mileage correctly into that cluster, or it would still be 60xxx? There's no way for the oil lights to work EVER? there's gotta be a way..

Can't change miles. Not without a m35080 chip reader.

Cool look but not worth it as the cool factor has yet to be solved for e38s. Also pixels are going out.

Should fit any car that doesn't have the removable box on the back.

I will say that this gauge cluster is a nice upgrade from the e38 one. I never realized just how insanely orange e38 clusters are.

Easiest way to check is to pull your cluster. If you have a black removable box (Ike) than it won't work. If you clusters back looks like this one, it will fit.
GSXRliterbikz
12-08-2013, 01:14 PM
Ok, so a friend who's far smarter than I said it will fit any e38. Even if it has the removable ike. He said if an older car with a removable ike needed a new cluster under warranty, it would be replaced with a regular one like this. BMW doesn't make replacement clusters to fit the old style.
So that means with proper coding it should fit any e38.

Current version that I have in my '97. Sending unit for oil presure was not hooked up, hence high reading.

Are the tach lights working?
Yes. Driven by an external module interfacing into the TPIC6B595 chip on the tach light PCB. Documented this method a couple of years back.

Craig has a prefacelift. So it has the 5.2 dme. So coding it to work isn't an option.

Craig just said his tach lights are working and he has oil temp per the picture... He stated that he got the tach and oil temperature guages working via an external module... I understand the simple vin change and zcs will code it like any other cluster but wont have the tach or oil temperature stuff working...
Craig, do you have a link to where you documented all this great info?
I can't tell you how he did it, but I can tell you for a fact that Nick Glantzis (Technique Tuning) installed this gauge in my '01 740, and the tach lights and oil temp gauge both work.
For sure, it can be done.

I suspect it has something to do with the x5 4.6 program files being written to your dme.

One module drives all of the functions.

I'm sure 4.6is programming is used and then fuel/timing maps are replaced to suit the 4.4 engine so it runs right. I can do that, just would have to do it in person first.
There maybe has to be more hardware needed to be installed.

AFAIK all you would need to do is enable sending the oil temp over CAN from the DME if you can find that bit.

Similar. iBus display is based off of the module in the link. Will be testing another module setup over the holidays (think this is rev one of revision three). If all works as planned, will post a write up about the experiment. As per the pic, fine tuning the temp reading.
