Today when I was driving to work I realized my cars airbag light was on. I stopped somewhere and parked turned off my engine and back on. Now it's off I just want to make sure nothing is wrong. Anybody know why this occurred?

The most likely candidates are the seat occupancy sensor or a seatbelt.
You can pull up the code that was set, however you'll need the correct scanner to do so. Your OBDII scanner only does drivetrain and emission codes.

You could buy your own SRS (airbag) scanner.
I picked up a Peake knockoff for $26. I used it on a friends car, it does work.

I have the same scanner and it has done a very good job of reading SRS codes.

If there are any error codes stored in the system, this will tell you them, and be able to reset them. If the problem persists, the codes will not stay cleared and will come back.

Sure does. I normally use BMWscanner when I want to read SRS codes.

My car had the airbag light on when I got it. I could not even communicate with the airbag module with an Autologic, so it was time for another module. I got a used one off eBay for $35. The first one I got was no good, so I had to swap it twice, but still, at a small fraction of the cost of a new module, I was happy with a good result. Two points though: A replacement module must be coded to the car, (I used an Autologic), and second, there are a number of different part numbers for E39 airbag modules; I would get a module with the exact same part number to avoid problems. The airbag module is located under the center console, so it's not the easiest to access, just a little bit tricky. You do not need to remove the center console. Once you remove the rear air vent, you can get to the module.
