My BMW 535i's M30 motor was making a wierd ticking noise, sounded like the valves were out of adjustment. So I adjusted them. I set the clearence to .012/.013 when the engine was cold. After puting everything back together the same ticking noise is present.

Get a mechanics stethescope from autozone or wherever, and probe around the engine with it running.

I'll bet you find that the injectors are pretty noisy. e28 guys have started changing their injectors to 19 lb/hr bosch injectors from a ford mustang. It is an updated design with 4 sprayers rather than one. They are direct plug and play, just need new BMW injector o-rings. Many have said it has quieted their m30 quite a bit...

Other than that, make sure the accessories like ps pump, alt, and such are not contacting anything and making some racket. My a/c compressor mad a bunch of noise, even with the a/c turned off. The clutch/pulley has bad bearings. I took the belt off.

At 160,000mi, my injectors are loud as hell. I looked in to replacing them, but at something like $42 a piece new (and hard to find 'slightly used') - I decided the noise wasn't that big of a deal..

But there's a couple listings on ebay for 5.0 Mustang injectors with way way less than 160k on them for around $30 for a set of 8 - I'd do this in a heartbeat.

My only concern, however, would be fuel mileage, because it's terrible enough as is. Swapping to a slightly higher flow injector shouldn't hurt that, though - the ECU will just adjust the duration to keep the mixture correct, right?

Thanks man. Interesting info. :)

Yep, a search on eBay for "mustang injectors" will turn up quite a few low-mileage sets of 8 injectors. A good move would be to take the used injectors and send them to a local diesel shop or a place like http://www.rceng.com/index.htm and have them cleaned and flow tested. That way, you know they are in top-notch shape. If all 8 pass the test, you have 2 extras! :)

I am not sure about the m30b35 in your e34, but the m30b34 in the e28 uses about 17.6 lb/hr injectors stock, so the increase in flow rate is ~7-8%. This is a moot point, however, since the ECU will compensate for the higer flow rate and cut the injector duration from it's inputs from the O2 sensor and such.

You might even see an increase (good) in fuel mileage because of the better atomization of the fuel charge from the newer design of the newer injectors.

FUCK YOU OLD INJECTORS. PISS THE HELL OFF. :)

What sound do injectors make exactly? And what about m50 pre vanos engines... will mustang injectors fit them too?
