Sorry guys, sure this has been covered. Did a bunch of wrenching on my '01 740i Sport today. My buddy stopped by with his '00 740il so we did an oil change and he wanted to put plugs in it also.

The two rear cylinders on the passenger side and the two front cylinders on the drivers side had oil on the plugs when we pulled them out. Passenger side were real oily, drivers side was noticeable but not as bad.

Cause?

Yep. Valve cover gaskets. VERY common.

Assuming you mean on the outer part of the plugs and threads. Vcg's leak inside and into the plug ports

Outer part looked dry. It wasn't until I pulled them out, the threads & electrodes were wet with oil.

This, like Chuck said, very common. Own the car long enough you will have replaced this several times!
