I did it. Fluid, filter, VB rebuild, and fill took just about all day on a Saturday.

Black plate uses regular atf, green is the lifetime fluid.

When I did my valve body rebuild it took me 2 days, mine had iron mud all over the channels and plungers was time consuming to get them out and I had to let them dry overnight in a warm 100*f oven. Black plates are the first gen 5hp30 green is second gen 5hp30, the black plates had the infamous plastic valve check ball shrinkage problem, the green plates shouldn't have that problem as the transmission has been revised/updated.

I don't think any E38 received black plate 5hp30's , black plate was predominantly in E34 (540i only) E32 (740 only) Early E31's (92-94 840i only )

Just for the sake of economics, the cost of a rebuild kit plus housing is not much lower than a completely rebuilt and tested VB with a wiring harness. May want to consider just buying one all done, then it's a 1 hour job.
Make sure you order the correct VB for your year group.

Oh I'm thinking of the 5hp22. Edwin had suffered from valve body issue with the main pressure valve and the reverse checkball issue.

Before you dive into this what's the reason for this?
If you buy a replacement VB you need the proper casting number.

Like u said earlier just to do ut olus i doubt the po changed the flyid and filter, i always see people say if your changing your fluid and filter for the first time and at high mileage you should get the VB rebuilt, am i wrong about this or its true?

735 has a 5hp24 transmission, there is no 5hp22 trans, just 4hp22.

that i did...it helped....but considering its a transmission with 215k on it my transmission is healthy but i think the TQ converter is just aging and should be replaced. im hoping to get a good year out of it which im confident with and then ill be able to get a used one and rebuild it and swap it out when it does fail

id be honest here, if you plan on doing that dont do both jobs at different times. do it both at the same time and only change fluid once. personally i should have done the same but i wanted to experiment.

^ agreed. and for a first time DIY on a VB rebuild i would just order a remanned one already built. it's easy to mess them up. there's so many little parts involved and everything has to be cleaned the right way.

Ok i cannot dissagree with that. New TC,VB and fluid and filter. That should set me back lets say 1k, i can do that in Dec.
Update- maybe more if i dont feel like removing a trans lmao

Any 5hpxx (24 & 30) trans with high mileage should have their VB rebuild, when i did my 5hp30 (At 278k mi Black tag 5hp30) i was surpised to find a couple thin spring that was snapped in half, the fat springs were slightly shorter then the new ones (the non-updated springs) which contributed my slightly harsh shifting, lots of crud that was caked on the canals, the internal VB filter was dirty and my check ball valves were shrunked (black tagged 5hp30 common problem) . The procedure is very straight forward remove, clean, reassemble (w/correct parts), torque it to spec (very important) and re-install.
The ZF VBK rebuild kit has an exploded diagram of the VB with all the parts label & numbered, the all the parts in the box are labeled and numbered corresponding with the parts diagram, so you cant really go wrong with rebuild them your self, but if you want 100% assurance send it off a reputable ZF service center, i didn't sent mine because it couldn't wait for 2-3 week turnaround and at that time i could not afford the price tag for rebuild so i was forced to do it my self which turn around i learned a lot from it since i never removed a VB and rebuild one before.

Did it take you a day also?
Actros617

Took me 2 days at that time as it was my VERY first time dealing with a transmission that doesn't have a dipstick and first time removing and rebuilding a VB so i was a little slow as i had almost not a clue and only relaying on various forums threads and a couple dozen DIY articles, one day to drop the pan and remove the VB, open the VB and clean all up and let the VB housing dry overnight in an oven at low heat 100*F (you dont have to do this method i didn't have much time on my hand) spend the rest of the day checking resistance & replacing o-ring on the solenoid and trying to wrap my brain around out how to properly refill the transmission.
The next day remove the vb from oven put everything back together, OCD recheck that everything was correctly torqued, re install it in a transmission and was still kind lost on how to refill the trans but i was successful. If i were to do this again it would take me 1 1/2 days the most time consuming part was cleaning the vb housing and letting it dry.

Well to update you actross on my situation I think I came out pretty lucky. I serviced the trans again Bout 4-5k ago. I drained the fluid it wasn't burnt at all!! I was really happy when I dropped the pan it was clean nothing abnormal for the mileage just some sludge on the magnets. Changing the transmission filter fixed all of my cold morning and overall shifting issues. I have no VB issues to deal with I'm not going to spend the money for a rebuilt until I absolutely need to. But I do agree probably changing it at the miles I'm at now would help considering the fact that parts wear overtime and springs in the VB for shifting will also become weaker and weaker.

Eriksson and Nate at Eriksson have a very good long standing reputation of having good service and being helpful with advice. Local to me. Met Nate last week picking up a VB kit, the VB casting containing main pressure valve, shift selector valve, filter, pan gasket, and fill and drain plugs for my 5HP24. Good prices. It's interesting that the shift selector valve is part of the 5HP30 kit but not in the 5HP24 kit. The upgraded main pressure valve is included in the 5HP24 kit. So don't need to buy that. Starting on this tonight.
