Wow. I'm slightly surprised there are some of these still on the road. I had an '02 R53 that was a total blast to drive whenever it wasn't in for service. After the warranty expired, I averaged over $2000 (USD) per years in repairs. First model year hiccups? This car met its final demise in '08. I picked up an '08 Clubman next, and now a '12 Coupé, but the R53 remains closest to my heart in spite of the issues.

Sorry for the reminiscing.

My first bit of advice would be to find another forum to ask this question, as the MINI section of Bimmerforums is not very active. My second bit of advice would be to have someone scan you OBD2 port for codes. Is your check engine light on? If not, it's probably burned out. ;-)

Could be anything, but if the car starts out strong and only begins hesitating when warmed up, the camshaft position sensor is a likely culprit. The good news with this is that it's a cheap and easy fix. This would be picked up by a port scan.

Good luck. Hope you can manage to keep her on the road for another 10+ years.

Fuel pump. I had mine replaced a year ago. It just stopped on me and no gas was getting into the engine. No engine codes, no warning lights or anything that the fuel system was off. I think there should have been a fuel pressure warning (check engine light and a code), but there wasn't.

I also have a very early '03 S (2002 build) that is still going strong. Your hesitation may be a large vacuum leak, often caused by a split rubber hose somewhere on the intake tract. With the car running, listen under the hood for for a hiss.
