I apologize if this has been discuss before but it's so relevant to what I need, so I felt the need to ask since it seems prudent.

I wanted to have on hand a OBD2 Scanner of some kind to read codes since I will be doing some work on my car this winter while its in hibernation. I was going to buy one of those orange/yellow hand held scanner that Autozone uses but started reading where folks are using P.A. Software and the BMW Scanner 1.4 with their laptops. Is this what I should be looking at as well?

Additionally, I would like to do some lite coding like double blinking hazards, etc. I have also heard about INPA. I have 2 laptops to use. 1 is running Windows XP and the other is a MAC-Book. Any advice and/or recommendations are appreciated.

Acquire an IceBox and you'll feel like a BMW God once you master it.

I bought a bluetooth elm and use the android torque app as a cheap obd2 scanner. I also have a bmw diagnostic laptop, but if I'm driving and an ses pops up I'll just quickly check with the android app for generic code.

If it needs more, I'll fire up INPA.

Total cost for torque app and elm bt adapter was 15 bucks and its pretty handy. Torque app is pretty cool.
