I'm looking for a winter wheel and tire setup for my new '97 M3 Sedan. Don't want to spend too much, but I want good winter tires. Don't mind buying lightly used either. What is a recommended tire and wheel size?

I got new wheels and used my stock wheels as a winter setup....I suppose the ideal setup would be the 7.5" width (e.g. 4 front wheels) all around with 225/45/17 so you can rotate the tires. thinner tires = better in the snow

This is what I do and it works great.

Some 16 inch wheels fit and would be the best choice for serious snow, but in CT, you don't need serious snow tires. I have run 17 x 7.5 Contours with 225/45/17 and 215/50/17. The serious snow tires will have a low speed rating and jiggly ride, meaning poor dry handling. The Continental Extreme Winter Contact actually are not bad in this category. I put a set on my wife's 535xi and it is stable at high speed. The Michelin X-Ice are OK once they have some wear. Generally, I go for the less serious snow tires that have the higher speed rating and stiffer sidewalls and less heavily lugged tread, and I am still able to get around in the snow without sacrificing as much dry handling.

Use the $500 in snow tires to buy a beater, garage M3.
but if you have to... +1 to 225/45/17 (could do 215/45 to 245/40) on some cheap 17x7-8's. Any snow tire will be 10X than the best all season, so don't even worry about brand/model (IMO). I ran 225/45/17 Michi PA2's on my old set of staggered DSIIs. Worked wonderful.

Winters are long here. I don't want to drive a beater that long sadly. I'll just do a weekly wash and was the underside as well. No biggie.
